Question of the Day- Is it Alright to Talk to Yourself?

When I misplace something in the house, I talk to myself as I try to remember where I put the darn thing, whatever it happens to be. I might even admonish myself by saying my name aloud for putting the item in a place I can't find it. It got me to wondering is talking to yourself normal behavior. It definitely would be kind of embarrassing if someone overheard me talking to myself, as one is supposed to communicate with another person, right? One explanation given by scientists for self-talk is as a young child our speech is still developing, and we are learning to connect our inner thoughts to speech. As we age, we can better verbalize those thoughts into full sentences. Therefore, the need to self-talk is replaced by communication with others. I did notice athletes using self-speech sometimes, an example would be tennis. Maybe it helps them concentrate better, block out distractions, and improves their performance in their matches. And if you remember the Robert DeNiro-Jodie Foster movie "Taxi Driver," didn't De Niro's character speak to himself. They say it improves self-confidence, although I'm not sure about that one. The character he played was disturbed. Oh well, however strange talking to myself might be, at least I don't think there is an imaginary person talking back to me. So, my question to you is, do you ever self-talk? And can you think of any other reasons why someone would communicate to themselves. Some Source Material: Stars Insider Photo- Tenor

I like to say that I say things out loud..not really talking to myself. You should hear how I say them too. I think it is great to talk to yourself.

I do the same thing. I'm not expecting an answer, but when I misplace things, I wish someone would tell me where I put them. I imagine a few cuss words might be uttered when talking to yourself... Science experts believe saying it out loud, like a misplaced car key, helps us find them because it reminds us of what we’re looking for, and we don’t lose focus.

Hmm, answering yourself. That's a little scary! Apparently you found those conversations between yourself both interesting and stimulating

I think it's quite normal to talk to yourself up to a point. I am a female sharing a home with three men... talking to myself is the norm for me

@dgobucks226 not shut out of conversations as we have many of the same interests. I meant more that they don't listen if I ask them something

Guess that can leave you shut out of many conversations... It's quite alright to do so according to some scientific studies.

Sometimes I do. Especially if I'm trying to spell out a word or something. I also talk to my cat as if he were human. My husband doesn't talk to himself all that often, but occassionally, he'll blurt out something. Because his brain is healing and he's trying to reconnect.

I see. When I was in school it helped me to memorize a lesson better by saying it aloud to myself. For example, when learning a foreign language. Or having to give a speech in front of people it helps by practicing it to yourself first. Teachers use this speaking aloud technique with children for spelling out words. I remember our Spanish teacher having us repeat phrases aloud or answer in that language to learn it better. Yes, when I had a cat, I would do the same. I do not see anything wrong with speaking aloud to oneself. Thanks for the input!

I think that often self speak is due to the lack of intelligent people around and oneself is of course intelligent in ones own eyes

Talking to oneself is a very common thing that many people do, I doubt there's any real reason for it.

Well, that's an interesting theory. I never thought of equating one's intelligence with talking aloud to themselves. Some examples of self-speak... Teachers use this speaking aloud technique with children for spelling out words. We might speak out loud to better visualize things. A puzzle like "Where's Waldo" is an example where you're finding an image.

@rebelann I disagree. I know when I talk aloud especially when looking for something I misplaced it helps me focus on where I might have left it. When I was in school it helped me to memorize a lesson better by saying it aloud to myself. For example, when learning a foreign language. Or having to give a speech in front of people it helps by practicing it to yourself first. So, in my view, there can be a useful reason for talking aloud.

Sure, it’s okay to talk to yourself, just don’t ask yourself to repeat something because you weren’t listening!

I'm always talking to myself. Unfortunately, I also tend to do it in public and have gotten some strange looks. But, I am the only one who understands me, so why not?

Science experts believe saying it out loud, like a misplaced car key, helps us find them because it reminds us of what we’re looking for, and we don’t lose focus. I have recently found myself doing that in the grocery store looking at my shopping list and directing myself to the proper store aisles to find it. I try to do it quietly as to not get those strange looks.

I guess a cat would answer you with a meow. When I had a cat I talked to her. I think many pet owners do. Teachers use this speaking aloud technique with children for spelling out words. I don't see anything wrong with talking to yourself. I do it from time to time but it's mostly to berate myself for something stupid that I've done.

I usually talk to the television and make comments about what I see or I watch the Game Show Network and admonish the contestants for not knowing the answers. Have a good weekend.

As the old saying goes, it's okay to talk to yourself. Only seek the assistance of a professional when you begin to argue with yourself. lol I talk to myself ALL THE TIME. In fact, it DOES help me to gather thoughts and formulate ideas. For all sorts of things. I learn a lot through talking to myself, in fact. lol

Yes, arguing with yourself would be weird. You are your own best teacher. I agree with you. Saying stuff aloud does help with organizing your thoughts. I do it myself.   Science experts believe saying it out loud, like finding a misplaced car key, helps us find them because it reminds us of what we’re looking for, and we don’t lose focus.

I've been doing the same lately in the grocery store. Going through my list and directing myself to each aisle location to find it.
