Time for the Way Back Machine!

Every April in recent years I’ve been celebrating my birthday by going back in time, musically. This year will be no different, as the next two months will be devoted to going back to songs from 1984, 1974, 1964….and, as an added bonus this year, I’m going back seventy years to 1954!
Why go that far back? Two reasons. One, some of you are young-at-heart enough to know songs from that year. Secondly, and more importantly, 1954 marked a major turning point in the sound of popular music. You’ll hear that as the countdown rolls along.
Of course, I wasn’t around in 1954, but I remember 1984 quite well. I’ll couple the 70-year-old songs with the 40-year-old tunes, just to liven things up (not to mention showing you what a real musical weirdo I am ).
We’ll get started tomorrow. Meanwhile, here’s your teaser, and it’s by a geezer. (Hey, I like some of Perry Como’s music!! One of his songs is on my 100 favorites list!)

@FourWalls I would have been 8 so maybe they'll be too old even for me!

@FourWalls Yes it is indeed. This song is a great hit, I dont know if they'll say the same for the 2024 songs 70 years from now!

It’s always fun to look back at these “old songs” that really don’t seem that old!

It was an interesting year for music. I get the benefit of hindsight, but I still enjoy quite a few of the songs that came out that year.
By the time I came along and was paying attention Perry Como had his “Kraft Presents Perry Como” specials on TV, which I didn’t get to see as a kid because they were on at 9 PM and that was my bedtime.

@FourWalls You are correct 9 PM was bedtime for kids, but on Sunday the Perry Como Show was at 6 PM, I remember we watched and I remember my Dad repeating "I cannot understand why people laugh".

I’ll give you two songs on the 1954 list to know. For 1984….I don’t have a clue. Part of me says you should know a lot of them, but in reality I’m counting on five.

Bring on 1954!! I'm anxious to see how many songs I know.
This song makes me smile and laugh. I can picture my dad dancing around to this song and my mom rolling her eyes

Not the most brilliant song Como ever did (“Round and Round” is the song on my 100 favorites list), but it was a different time.

They all aren’t going to be this easy…or this “not-country” sounding.

Well, that was unique. Was Perry doing a Frankie imitation on that tune? I'll stick with his Christmas classics. Perry does a great (There's No Place Like) Home for the Holidays. One of my favs.
I guess I'll have to wait for something a little less Geeky, I mean Geezery

Novelty songs don’t go over well with a good singer like Perry. I agree with you on his Christmas music. His version of “O Holy Night” is spectacular.
