Adding your pets into your will

I don’t have a will and had never really thought about what people would put in one.
My husband was asked by a friend to take on his 4 dogs if anything should happen to him. When originally asked he had two dogs but one died and now he has two more.
We have two inside dogs and three outside. That’s plenty without taking on 3 yikes.
Let’s hope the guy out lives his animals and he doesn’t get more. The guys 70 years old. Very responsible of him to make sure his dogs will be taken care of but at 69 he probably should not have gotten two little puppies.
If you have pets and you have a will did you include your pets in your will?
Photo is unrelated. I was going to do a post recently about my Easter but just didn’t feel up to it things have been a bit stressful and very busy. This was the first time I ever made a fancy basket usually I just put the items in a basket and that’s it. This time I piled my little ones up to look even bigger and used the clear wrap and added some lace. I did my oldest daughter’s fancy too.

You've gone to alot of work doing up the basket, it looks great and I am sure that your daughter was thrilled.
That is alot to ask of someone to take on their pets, especially when they have their own and a family, and pets really are additions to the family.
He needs to show responsibility and caring concern and stop getting puppies. We no longer have a pet, part of it is for this reason.

@snowy22315 the puppy we have now is difficult enough. She will not stay off the table and tonight I made a big crockpot of Mac and cheese and a 9x12 casserole dish of cheesy scalloped potatoes and ham. My husband had a few spoonfuls. My daughter and her boyfriend had some while I was in the shower and didn’t put the lids back on. The puppy jumped up on the table and ate the whole dish of scalloped potatoes. I felt like crying. It’s just been one of those days. I chose to write about the will instead of my whole crazy day

I think I have an old will hiding in my papers somewhere but can't think where. If it's still around, it would be woefully out of date. I'm waiting for the will workshop we're supposed to have at the Centre but with Christmas, and the move, it's been put off.

@shaggin It's a holographic will... no lawyers were consulted.

@BarbaraPrz hmm if you don’t know where your will is would you be able to get another copy from a lawyer or court house. I have no clue how things work?

The Easter basket looks beautiful. I don't have a pet but I would possibly make an agreement to be taken care of. I think your husband can say he needs to discuss it with you before he agrees and you can make a plan together. Dogs need a lot of care and come with extra cost too, for food, vets etc. Maybe you should have an agreement for the cost as well?

If I did have pets who outlive me, I would put them in my will.

So far we only have Chilly. We suspect he has a good two to three more years. Depending on what happens, we'll think about it. Before the stroke, George had mentioned wanting to get a pair of kittens after Chilly passes. Now, we're playing life by ear.

@kaylachan you probably wouldn’t have time for a pair of kittens now. Maybe after he improves and is home again.

Really wonderful basket. Our pets are very dear to us but maybe not included in a will

@averygirl72 Thank you for your kind comment about the Easter basket I prepared for my little girl. I don’t think I would put my pets in a Will if I had one either.

That is a cute basket. Never even thought of a will. I have told my friend here when I got to just dump me into a clean waste bin and get me taken away, My stuff can be tossed and my cats I know he will take care of,

@shaggin my friend will see to them but then who knows who will go first. I could be here today gone tomorrow as could the cats for whatever reasons. I figure God willing I should have about 10 more years at least and then will see how things look,

That's a great looking basket. I had included a special document to include our dogs in our will. Now that we no longer have dogs, I will have to change the will. It's good to make arrangements for your pets. Have a good weekend.

@LindaOhio if you needed to add another pet into the will I can see but I don’t think you’d really need to have the will changed to remove the ones that have passed do you?

@shaggin I have to change the will anyway for the beneficiaries. I will remove that special document that covers the dogs as we don't have any anymore.

@LindaOHio oh I see that makes sense. Didn’t want you to have to spend money you didn’t need to

You can put your pets up for adoption in the will instead of adding them in the will. They are not humans you know.

@mildredtabitha well this ensures someone will adopt the pet and it won’t go to a stranger.

I like the basket a lot!
I already asked my dad to take my dog if something happens to me. Logic says I’ll live longer, but if not, he’s the caregiver. If not him, my best friend has agreed to take her.
Let’s hope that friend lives many more years. I would have hoped he would have adopted a middle aged dog instead of puppies, but he’s probably thinking he doesn’t want to live through the pain of another dog dying soon. Which I understand, but it makes it tougher on you guys. Because we know you’ll be the one taking care of them, not anyone else.

@AmbiePam that’s really good you have two people who have agreed to take your dog if something happens to you.
I think he should have just stuck to the one dog he has and not gotten any more dogs really especially not a puppy that may very likely outlive him
