We just had an earthquake!

Whoa. That was crazy. We just had a 4.7 earthquake with the epicenter in northern New Jersey. I was laying in bed just scrolling through Twitter when the bed and building started shaking. It lasted for about 10 seconds. This was the first time I've ever felt an earthquake. They are not common in this part of the country. There was a bigger one near DC like 10 years ago but I missed feeling it. My sister and I were leaving the beach and driving on the sand. It is a bumpy experience and it occurred while we were bouncing around in her SUV. There are people on FB saying that they were so scared and that things fell off of shelves. I think that is being a little dramatic. There was some shaking yes but nothing moved or fell here. It definitely freaked out the cats though.

Just saw that on Fox News. My aunt lived in Calif. for a while, and she couldn't wait to get out of there because of the earthquakes. Years ago when I lived in KY, while training to sell cemetary plots, the trainer and I were talking to a couple about buying plots, and there was an earthquake (small one), and he ended up selling them plots. LOL They kept saying no..didn't need them...NO, then the earthquake and they said Yes! LOL But feeling the earth move under your feet is unnerving! Hope that there is no more shaking for you!

@sallypup Didn't last long. My old boss asked me to come back to work with a raise.

I've never experienced a true earthquake, but twice in my life I did feel some minor shaking/vibrating here in Florida when we had huge offshore mudslides out in the ocean. The first time it occurred I was in college and actually at the beach in Daytona at the time, and I could feel the shaking. I guess the authorities knew something had occurred offshore because they began evacuating the beach, and sure enough there was a tiny tsunami wave not too long afterward, nothing that caused any major damage. I'm glad your earthquake wasn't more serious, and that there was no major damage reported. I often wonder how well the skyscrapers in New York would handle earthquakes.

We have had a couple of quakes here. One was 5.0 and was enough to shake things off shelves. I haven't heard of anyone being injured; so that's a good thing. I'm glad you're OK.

that's a common thing here, because we have fire rings everywhere.

Glad you were ok - yah, I didn't think it'd be common out your way (oh but it is here!).

We felt it here in PA and it was pretty scary. I have to add that things did fall off shelves so that isn't an exaggeration. This was my first experience with an earthquake too.

If I was in a skyscraper building and the building shook I'd be quite scared. My last house- a mobile- stood on a little hill. One afternoon a strong wind came up that shook all the windows hard. My dogs were freaked out.

It is definitely a strange feeling to be in an earthquake of pretty much any strength when you don't get them often. I was watching the news when it was announced so have been following it. So many unexpected things happen anymore, it's just a weird world.
