Did it and am home alive

I put in 35 minutes exercising in the water. Then the big test for the day: I went to the Dollar General. That store is a sugar and processed foods emporium. Dollar General also has one section way up in front that has fresh food. I bought two avocados, a half pound of fresh mushrooms. I also found a dozen eggs- about fifty cents less than in my usual store for the eggs. The cat litter that I bought weighed fourteen pounds and cost about the same as the usual twenty pounds. I also found a can of black beans at a decent price. The toothpaste that hubby needed? Gulp. $3.50 for 6 ounces. Insane. He needs it so I bought two. I just had a lunch sandwich of hummus and avocado. Tasty. The avocado was ripe. I'm grateful the Dollar General has a section of fresh food.

@kaylachan Thanks. I laughed when I saw a bag of Bisquick. That made me think of my Mom.

Our Dollar General does not have any fresh food, darn it. If it did, I would make the two minute walk to ours way more often. I’m glad to hear yours had something worthwhile though!

I occasionally buy fresh food there. I try to NOT buy goodies, though.

@GardenGerty There wasn't a very big selection of fresh food but it was good to see something not processed.

You are lucky! Our's doesn't have that. You could count on one hand the healthy foods that they have. Although once in awhile they have something I didn't think they would.

@snowy22315 I think the Dollar General does the natural food thing cause its a 'food desert' otherwise. The section is pretty hidden,

Good workout. Don't you also have a farmers market close by where veggies and stuff is a little cheaper? I tried to find the one I've been told is close to where I live but it's alluded me

Thanks I was told that the farmers market around here is in some open area where each farmer sets up a tent or something with his veggies or fruits .......l. considering how hot and dry it gets here I'd think most of those farmers were selling pecans, corn or cotton unless they grow stuff in a greenhouse. Boy how I wish I had a greenhouse, but I've read how expensive that can be given the high prices for water out this way

@rebelann I'm sorry you can't find the store. My Farmer's Market doesn't open until next month and the vegies and fruit actually cost more than they do in the store. It is better, though cause I know where the food came from and its fresher.

Our Dollar General has a good section of fresh foods to. They also added freezers and have lots of foods in the freezer sections.

@jstory07 I skimmed the freezer section today and found tasty junk. I didn't buy anything from there. I did see bags of vegies but they were small and made to be used in a microwave. I don't have a microwave in my kitchen.

I tend to avoid buying food products from any store with "Dollar" in its name.

I'm glad your Dollar General has fresh food. The one on the corner near me, doesn't. It's all junk food, heavily processed.

@JudyEv You probably have what I call 'landmine stores' too. Tons more unhealthy edibles than healthy stuff.

I didn't know that Dollar General has fresh food section, the ones I go to here don't. Maybe they will sometime soon. Glad you found what you needed. It is a shame what things cost nowadays.

@Dena91 The Dollar General that I went to today didn't have tons of fresh produce but I liked the effort. hope the one in your area gets some fresh stuff stocked.

As far as I know, none of the Dollar General stores anywhere around here have fresh foods. They do have a frozen section of foods and ice cream, etc. as well as milk, butter, lunchmeat, and so forth. They of course have a non perishable selection of foods, too. It's so hard to find bargains these days, you did the best you could.

@MarieCoyle I am trying hard to reduce or not eat at all stuff like butter and lunchmeat. I need to gain some health before I get too much older. I saw the ice cream! Looked pretty tasty.

@MarieCoyle I think the Dollar General is not a cheap place to buy food or other things. They just say they are.

@sallypup I don’t really see any food bargains at our local Dollar General. At least not as cheap as Aldi or Ruler.
