India's 2024 general election, which will be going to take place over six weeks from April 19 to June 1, will be the largest in history. The Lok Sabha selects the Prime Minister, who in turn selects the cabinet ministries. In the 2019 election, the BJP won 303 seats, while its coalition of parties, the National Democratic Alliance, gained 352 seats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hopes to win a third term, but opposition parties warn that if he remains in power, Indians will lose many of their present liberties. According to recent opinion surveys, Mr Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies will win the Lok Sabha elections - India's lower house of Parliament - for the third consecutive term.
