What it's like to drive for food delivery

I have mentioned a few times now that I did some drives for Uber and Door Dash on my way home from work and made a little extra and is seemed worth it to me. So, I was wondering how it would go as a part-time job if I did it a little more regularly. Maybe a few hours after work or on my days off. I’m going to do it for a month and see how it goes. I have seen how they figure that people can make $20 plus an hour doing it. So far I have found they must take that amount from the time actually on a delivery. What I mean is you log on to the app but if no order comes through you wait till one come through. Then on comes through and you click to accept the order go get it, drop in off and click off that order and wait till another comes through. So, if you only count the time on the order the hour rate will be higher. The time waiting for orders they must not count but in my opinion it’s still time that should be counted. Example of one day I logged on and waited then got some orders and waited a while and turned it off and went home. So here is the thing, I was on deliveries for one hour and one minute of the of the total one hour and 57 minutes being logged into the app. I made $21.11 so if you look at the time I was on deliveries I basically made the 21.11 in an hour and one minute. Not bad but since there was time I was waiting, basically 2 hours total on my time I made basically $10.50 an hour. Not as impressive, is it? That was just one small example and as I said I am going to give it a little more time and see how it goes, I did have 2 other days that went better and one that was even worse. Once I get like 2 weeks in I will let you all know how its going.

What you make in one hour is interesting and I suppose the cost of gas is not so high to cut a lot into your earnings.

Gas around here is about $3.30 a gallon. So, higher than it has been but not too bad yet.

How are the tips? I used to tip in person because I heard Doordash didn’t give the tips straight to the drivers. I wanted to make sure the drivers got the money. But then Covid hit, and I no longer saw the drivers. Plus, I saw on the site where Doordash indicated they now give 100% of tips to drivers.

Well, Doordash claims to give it all to the driver, but I guess we just have to take their word for it. The tips very from each delivery. Some are really good, and some are not.

Do not forget the cost of your gas in that figure.

That is true. I obviously use my car for other things, but I am keeping track of the mileage and will figure that in but how many miles per gallon I get and then the cost of gas.
