4/19/24 - Update on My Husband

Yesterday was not a good day.
I get a call saying that our appeal was denied; and insurance coverage runs out today. I filed an appeal which could take up to 2 weeks. During that time we will be liable for the full cost of the room. Approximately $16,000+.
Then hubby's cousin said we could move him out today with a wheelchair and bring him home. Hubs decided he wants to stay.
Then I get a call from the rehab facility letting us know we have an outstanding bill with them for $200+ per day x 21 days = $4,200.
By this time my stomach was doing flip flops. I hope the second appeal comes back in record time in our favor.
Would appreciate any prayers and thoughts you can muster.

Did you ever contact the VA to see what kind of facilities they have available? Whether or not he comes home you had better get some home health care set up. He is going to need a lot of help I suspect. I will keep you in my prayers.

@MarieCoyle There are a variety of services they offer..and I am sure rehab services are offered. My friend with Alzheimers is a vet..but isn't in a facility like that but apparently they have checked some out.

I wondered that as well. I know that some vets use the VA regularly.

It makes me sick to my stomach that those insurance morons basically FORCE you to get an attorney (which is more money out of your pocket).
You know you’re in my prayers.

@LindaOHio A attorney will only waste your money.

I'm not quite sure how the attorney would help us.

@LindaOHio That is a lot, we have a copay with our insurance but for no reason it can be more than $ 2,000 per year.

@LadyDuck The check that is due for Monday is $9,000. Physical therapy will be a separate charge.

The $4,200 is our share and we must pay that.

Honestly, I am tired of sending "kind" thoughts and prayers. Instead I am sending a Warren Zevon song and an end-weighted walking stick, designed for whapping money-takers and lazy workers around the knees and buttocks. @FourWalls will explain if I am not clear in my intentions. You should not have to go through this cr*p.

@LindaOHio I'm not sure either. You might call an atty and ask what your options might be. An initial consultation is generally free.

Thank you. My husband wants me to hire an attorney; but I'm not quite sure what his role would be? Help us what?

Oh my! I'm praying for a positive answer from the appeal. I also think your hubby's cousin has the right idea to move him out and bring him home.
I'm praying for God's will in your situation and His help to cover the finances. He can do it.

@LindaOHio I hear you, that supreme court hearing this morning was so depressing. Basically I came out thinking you need to get rich or powerful and preferably both because rules do not apply to them. I was so tired of listening to guy trying to defend no one is above the law, because he has to be respectful to the supreme justices. I am like light those fools up. So many "I agree, but".... I wanted to choke him.

@rebelann We have paid $9,000 to cover 30 days at the facility and $1,218 to cover our copay for the first 21 days. We will still owe for physical therapy for the 30 days. The woman in the Business Office couldn't tell me how much PT will be, which I don't believe!

@LindaOHio I agree. The way the health care system is in this country, they want to bankrupt people and make them homeless. I am an odd type of Conservative because I think this country needs Universal healthcare like what Bernie Sanders pushed in a past election.

@LeaPea2417 I agree with you on the UHC. Everyone I've ever talked to in the UK and Canada loves it.

Oh, Linda, this is terrible! I can't even imagine how upset both of you must be. I wish I had solutions for your situation, but God Himself does. Try to stay strong in your trust in Him.

Wow! Sticker shock, I hope your appeal is eventually upheld. It would be cheaper to have a nursing service come daily to your home to help your husband until he fully recovers.
Binging him home may be a better solution.

We dipped into our retirement fund. The check that is due Monday is for $9,000. Physical Therapy will be a separate charge. The $4,000+ bill should be in the mail.

The last thing you need to worry about at a time like this is medical bills and expenses. I hope this can get resolved quickly. I will be praying for God to intervene in the situation.
