Q of the Day: Soup or Salad or Something Else

Many times, when dining out at a restaurant one gets a choice of soup or salad along with your meal. I usually opt for the salad, it's not as filling as soup, so I have room to enjoy my main course. There have been times where I have chosen soup, usually during wintertime when you want something warm and comfy.
Now, if I'm ordering a sandwich at lunchtime, I think soup is a perfect complement, just like jelly is to a peanut butter sandwich. Then of course, soup or salad are not the only choices available to go along with having a meal. For example, I can see ordering fries as a choice to go along with a hamburger, even if there might be an extra charge.
Anyway, that's my opinions and choices, but it really comes down to one's personal preference.
So, your turn:
1. Which is your go to soup or salad?
2. When you order soup do you prefer thick and creamy or clear kinds?
3. Which dressing do you prefer on your salad?
***While you're thinking over the answers to my post, enjoy these fun soup and salad facts:
-Americans sip over 10 billion bowls of soup every year.
-Women are twice as likely to order soup at a restaurant than men.
-Lettuce used in making a salad is a member of the sunflower family.
-Lettuce is the second most popular fresh vegetable in the US behind potatoes.

Hi Melanie! Happy springtime to you. Yes, steak salad is a popular menu item. Funny, I've never tried it on a salad. I'm going to have to see what I'm missing, lol. It does look really tempting...

-McDonald’s salads are more fattening than their burgers.
-When Andy Warhol was once asked why he painted the iconic soup cans, he said: “I used to have the same (Campbell’s soup) lunch every day for 20 years.” Guess it made an impression, lol.

@dgobucks226 Awesome facts. And I absolutely agree with the salads vs burgers. They load that salad up w/ croutons and tons of salad dressing made from toxic seed oils and you’ve got yourself a recipe for disaster.
And love the ^yummy^ pic hahaha

@dgobucks226 - Some salads need only oil, not even vinegar, for red salads oil and lemon juice is better than vinegar. Of course I was not picky and I did not ask for white or red vinegar or lemon juice, I asked oil and vinegar and I know that often it was not even olive oil.
I know that the word soup comes from French soupe ("soup", "broth"), which comes through Vulgar Latin suppa ("bread soaked in broth"). There are several soups that I like, my favorite is a very simple potato creamy soup.
I know almost nothing of iceberg lettuce that was introduced here in Europe only recently. My favorite is the Romaine lettuce and the red leaf lettuces.

Olive oil and vinegar is a great dressing choice. Doing it yourself keeps the salad from getting soggy and reduces those extra cals in ready made dressings. Do you have a favorite kind of soup?
Did You Know These Additional Soup and Salad Facts:
- Soup was first known as “sop,” which was a medieval dish of a thick stew poured on slices of bread to soak up the liquid.
-Iceberg lettuce got its name from the way it was shipped in old train carriages. Ice was piled on the cartons of lettuce to keep it cold. When the trains came to town, people would shout the "icebergs are coming."

You make me long for the restaurant we had around here for a decade called, Souper Salad. It was soooo good! Eleven different kinds of salads with every kind of dressing, and seven soups with different toppings…Darn it! My mouth is salivating right now.
I totally believe women go for the soup more often at restaurants. It isn’t this way all the time, but generally soup has less calories, and a heck of a lot of female souls worry about their waistline.

@dgobucks226 I had no idea that’s why he painted soup cans. That’s pretty funny, and kind of cool.

That sounds like a great place for an appetizer type meal. Lots of choices of soup and salad for every taste. Good point about soup, women, and waistlines.

Me on the salad, go figure! Clam chowder is the best OT, especially when it's cold out.

Soup is too heavy before a meal; so I would choose a salad.
I like soup to be like a stew. Thick and full of noodles or whatever.
I like Ranch but also like a lot of other dressings too.
Have a good weekend.

Yes, with a main course soup can be filling. I usually will go with salad too.
I enjoy Balsamic Vinnegar, Creamy Italian, Buttermilk or Ranch on my salads.
I prefer choosing a thick hearty soup like clam chowder too.

Sometimes it's whatever appetizer we feel like at that time. And certain eateries may have better soup or salad than others.

We wouldn't normally be offered soup or salad with a main course, unless it is specifically soup and a sandwich. We might have a salad or a choice of potato/rice with a main but soup (usually with bread) would be offered as a starter.
I sometimes like to have a soup starter, depending on the type of soup, what other options there are, and how hungry I am! I like most soups but I'd probably say I prefer them more thick than runny.
My preference with dressings is to not have one. I don't mind a little balsamic vinegar but, otherwise, I prefer my salad to taste of salad. I like it crisp and crunchy whereas I find dressings make it limp and make everything taste of dressing.

There is a lot of thought process when deciding on soup or salad. I agree with you, it depends on the situation.
For me, like you, I prefer choosing a thick hearty soup like clam chowder. And I will order different dressings Balsamic Vinnegar, Buttermilk or Ranch on my salads.
Thanks for you input!

I don't usually order either with my meals unless it is a place that has a buffet and a soup/salad bar with the buffet. We have a restaurant here in my town that has such a buffet. It has been a long time since I have been able to go there, but when I do, I almost always order the buffet. There are options as well. You can order just the soup and salad bar, or the entire buffet. So it depends on what is on the buffet that particular day. But the soup and salad bar is always excellent. The soup changes by the day like the buffet does. I prefer their beef vegetable soup. There was a pizza restaurant that had soup on their salad buffet. They had a wonderful thick potato soup that I loved. I always added shredded cheese from the salad bar to the soup, making it even better.

Buffets are great for salad-soup because of the choices. I enjoy putting the different fixings they have on my salad. When I lived in Florida there was a buffet place, I went to called Sweet Tomatoes. Great buffet!
I also enjoy a thick hearty creamy soup. Potato is a good one. I like clam chowder.
Thanks for your response!

Well, yes soup is soup, however choosing creamy and hearty vs clear does make a difference to me. The texture is not the same between the two and a creamy one is much more filling. I do agree that both have their advantages. Who doesn't like all those nutrients in chicken soup, lol.
