Of course, the fort itself is worth seeing. If you can get past the other out-of-this-world view. I know it had to be difficult for the soldiers who were stationed there, from the Spanish in 1736 to the US Army during the Spanish-American War in 1898. I spent my teenage years in Florida, I went through boot camp in Florida, and I was stationed in Florida. I can tell you from personal experience that those summers can be brutal, especially if you’re out doing drills in a wool uniform. But oh, the view from the top of the fort!!!! What about the fort itself? After the view during the drive to it and the view on top of it, do you think I care?

What a scenic view from the fort out to the waterway. And those clouds really add a bonus to your photo! I lived in Fort Myers for one year. And the summers were definitely brutal. Hopefully, the soldiers received an occasional sea breeze to cool off.

I never thought about the problem of the uniform until I got to feel the uniform a friend of mine, who’s a Civil War reenactment worker, wears. WOOL. In the middle of a hot and humid Tennessee or Georgia or Louisiana battlefield?? NO.

@FourWalls For sure! And those long marches to engage in battle, sometimes through rain and mud. A soaked wool uniform can't be pleasant either.

I agree that a fort is always worth a visit. No matter where I have been I have visited the forts.

I agree. We have an earthen fort from the Civil War era not too far from where I live. It was never used in a battle, but it’s still great to visit!

Oh, yes indeed! The drive along A1A was great, too, because the ocean was beautiful.
