5/3/24 - Update on My Husband

BAM! And the other shoe drops.
Got a call yesterday morning from my favorite Social Worker. Insurance wants my husband out as of today; so I had to file another appeal. I hope I gave her enough information about his present condition. It's too soon for him to come home.
He's doing well. He can walk a good distance with the walker; but he still needs someone to follow him with a chair as sometimes his knee or hip will go out on him or he gets tired. He still needs help getting in and out of bed.
Thank you for your continued support, prayers and thoughts.

I know that the son of my neighbor had exactly the same problem with his mother. When rehab thought his mother could not "improve more" they sent her home. I hope you can keep your husband there for a couple more weeks, or at least for some more days.

@LindaOHio I hope he will. They sent that very old home back home here, his son works and the nurse only comes a few hours a day, she does not stay all the day long.

That Social Worker is really two-faced. Thanks. They will probably only give him another week or two if the appeal is in our favor.

I am glad to hear that he is improving. I hope the insurance will give him more time and not give you any trouble about it.

How well are you expecting him to be? What do his rehab doctors think? Following someone with a chair is standard pratice when in an environment like that.

@LindaOHio Do you have steps going in and out of your home? If so, there are ramp options you can look into to help with that.

@kaylachan There are 3 steps into the house. The ramp would have to be pretty steep. I would prefer that he could do the steps.

He has to be able to get in and out of his chair without any assistance. He's not there yet. Rehab says he's not ready to try steps yet either.

I can hear the business office now: “Hey, she wants her money back, how about ending the coverage tomorrow?”
I cannot believe that they will not give you that short a notice and think it’s okay with the world.

A friend's husband required emergency care a while ago. He was admitted to the hospital but as soon as he was stablised, they sent him home, only to need emergency care again in a day or two. I think this happened three times until my friend finally told the hospital to not send him home again because she wouldn't let him in the door! He was there for a few months but is home now and a nurse comes in to check on him.

It doesn't sound like he is going to last there until he gets well enough to come home. I think you may need to go to the VA. I am sorry to hear the news.

Linda, are you saying that you will not be able to do these things? As his wife, this wouldn't be forever, of course. After a short while, he would be able to get around unassisted. And home healthcare will help you, a few days a week.

@LindaOHio I wonder how this will happen, with the insurance refusing to cover it.

@kobesbuddy We won the latest appeal. The longer we can keep him in PT the better.

He used to help ME do things since I am partially disabled. I cannot help him in and out of his chair or help him up the steps to the house. He needs to stay until he can function on his own.

He needs care for some more time. It's a bit early to bring him home. I hope that they consider your appeal and let him stay in the rehab for some more time. Prayers and thoughts for you

We will keep him there as long as he needs the PT regardless of what insurance says.
