What did you want to be when you grew up?

Pictured is my 12 year old niece, Amyra, who wants to be a graphic artist when she graduates school someday. She just won a state competition for drawing and painting, and goes on to nationals in July, soon after her 13th birthday. I’m really excited for her, and of course, proud.
I figured I’d be a teacher when I grew up, although when I was really young I thought I might want to be a news anchor. I couldn’t be a teacher nowadays; not just because of my health, but because the parents these days don’t make their children obey. Eventually, I would lose my temper at the continued insolence.

@AmbiePam Really, I didn't know that there was anyone else out there who shared my sweet dream.
I am happy for her that she lived that dream, and that she was so great at it that her daughter is living it now also. I am sure that your Mom had a big impact on both of your lives, it may be the reason your sister is such a great Mom herself. And of course you the dotting auntie.

Sounds good and best of luck to her, I wanted to be a great artist but outgrew that, Then I wanted to be an actress and even after finishing university and starting my first job I went nights to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Manhattan in NYC but did not finish the four year course so that was the end of acting,

@AmbiePam It was for a while but I never made it to the silver screen, What is interesting is that as a young adult before WW II and emigrating my mom worked for the Riga Kino Studios in Latvia,

Oh my gosh she looks so grown up here!! How great for Amyra - she's already doing so well in the arts . I wanted to be a million things, but I was discouraged to be in the arts as a career. All my school life I excelled in the creative stuff and didn't think much more about it. Late in high school I took an art class and I met a friend who encouraged me to become an art major in college - and that I did (much to my dad's dismay). I eventually got into the printing industry and became a graphic artist .

@AmbiePam Just keep on doing what she loves doing and never stop learning . Being in these competitions builds up her self esteem and the yearn to do her best . . . it will also look great for her college resume if she decides to go. Getting in the habit of making a yearly portfolio is good too . Best of luck to Amyra!!!

When I was a child I wanted to be a primary school teacher but then when I was like 18 years old because I am so shy I thought I wasn't capable to become a teacher because you need to speak to a lot of people and everyone is looking at you. Even if they were children it was still pressuring to me because I feel uncomfortable if many people look at me at the same time.
So when I went to college I thought about becoming a translator or a therapist so I could help a lot of people.
Congrats for your niece, she is amazing. I really hope she wins the nationals aswell

When I was a child I wanted to be an archaeologist. When I went to college I was studying to be an elementary teacher.

Congratulations to Amyra. I always wanted to be a nurse until I got older. Then I wanted to be a serious actress. My mother had other ideas for me. She wanted me to be a secretary. Fortunately I was promoted out of that job and have held better jobs since then. I couldn't be a teacher either with the kids today. Have a good day.

@AmbiePam I probably wouldn't have married my husband though. I would regret that!

Like many young boys I wanted to be a professional in a sport. In my case, a professional baseball player. Then realism set in, and I became a teacher and H.S. coach.

@AmbiePam Oh sure! I look at the stats of the ballplayers on Sundays to see how some of my favorites are doing and the 2 teams I follow, the Mets and Red Sox. I don't watch as much on TV as I cut ties with Cable TV but will look at highlights on you tube and ESPN sports.

I was not very sure what I wanted to be when I grew up. I took one step at a time and landed up doing my Masters in Biotechnology. I loved it. I did work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. But then destiny had something else in store. After my younger daughter was diagnosed with Autism, I ended up becoming a special educator and counselor..And I am so happy that I found my real passion here.
My elder daughter is doing her Design degree from one of the most reputed institute in India and world. Amyra sounds so much like her when she was 12. I wish a very bright future for this amazing talented kid

That's great, and good luck to her in July.
I always wanted to be a singer so I was in choir for 6 years through school...but I was never very good. Then I wanted to write books. Eventually I got led to the graphic/digital art path.
At one point I wanted to be a chef even, but my anxiety wouldn't let me go back to school for that or work in a kitchen full of people.

Amyra is such a beautiful young lady!
I always wanted to be a wife and mother. I think I would have been a good teacher, but certainly not these days.

After seeing some of your nieces artwork I'd say she has a bright future as a graphic artist.
I was always interested in nursing

@AmbiePam thanks Amber. There are days when I wish I had pursued that as a career but being a mom turned out to be my most fulfilling as well as hardest job.

You have a lucky niece an artist. She will become rich once she grows up with her potential. She could invest her potential. When I was a child I wanted to become a lawyer but I landed into teaching at the university teaching Physics.

I wanted to be an advocate. I became a law professor. But many things which I loved I could pursue as finance became a requirement. I loved painting, I loved music.

Amyra looks like she's destined for greatness with her talent and ambition! Winning a state competition at such a young age is no small feat. I'm sure she'll do amazing at nationals too. As for your career aspirations, it's interesting how they've evolved over time. It's understandable that your health considerations might steer you away from teaching, but it's clear you have a heart for mentoring and guiding others. Wishing Amyra all the best in her artistic journey!
