A Hallmark of Summer at least for me

I eat corn on the cob fairly often in the summer because it is pretty cheap and tastes delicious. Food Lion had 4 ears for a dollar for the Mem Day holiday. It is always dirt cheap on the summer holidays. By the time Labor Day rolls around I am pretty corned out though. What is a Hallmark of Summer for you?

I haven't had fresh green beans in years. My mom and I always cooked them together with new potatoes and ham or bacon. I forget about getting it most years since I am pretty much stuck at home all the time. But if I don't get at least one dozen ears of corn and a watermelon and musk melon, it just doesn't seem like summer. Well not really, but I do love having that at least once each summer. I have to cut the corn off the cob and fry it to eat it now though. My teeth can handle biting the corn off the cob.

@snowy22315 I used to eat it only in the summer, but my mother got me started on ice cream sandwiches so I eat it mostly all year long.

Corn on the cob is not cheap in my book. I never buy it from the store because that is even more expensive. The only place I will buy corn on the cob is from farmers themselves who used to set up roadside stands in the summer. There are also farmer's markets to buy from where you can buy all kinds of summer fruits and vegetables. Corn on the cob is usually sold by the dozen there. Usually, you get what is called a baker's dozen which is 13 ears instead of 12. That is an older tradition, and I am not sure if farmers still do that. It is a lot cheaper to get canned or frozen corn, but obviously not as wonderfully good. I don't have the ability to go out and find the good fresh corn anymore, plus, the only way I can eat it is after having it cut off the cob due to teeth issues now. But I love fried corn the way my mom used to do in bacon grease or butter. Those are a hallmark of summer to me...not the only ones though. Summer for me means a lot of things, especially the foods you cannot get in the cold months of the year. It also means activities that are only done during the summer months, like swimming, fishing, and many other things, including holiday celebrations.

The Farmers Markets and roadside stands charge more for it here than the supermarkets do. I mean you can't beat 4 ears for a dollar, and it is good corn.

@snowy22315 You cannot get 4 for a dollar here. It is several dollars for 3 or 4 small ears.

I guess it would be watermelon. That's was always a summer thing as a child but now you can get it all year round.

Yes, watermelon pretty much screams summer too. Dark sweet cherries I just eat in the summer for the most part too because they are in season then

@snowy22315 Grapes would be another one as you don't get them all year round.

So good. My grandparents had a farm and wasn't until towards the end of the summer that it was ripe. We would get a grocery bag to take home..and help my mom and grandmother can corn. Mostly we kids shucked..but helped with cutting the corn off the cob too. Boy was that fresh cors slathered in butter ever delicious!!

@snowy22315 Hadn't done a barbeque in decades. It isn't anything that I grew up with or ever took a liking to as an adult.

Man, I don’t know. Growing up, it was always watermelon. Now, I have no idea. I guess just more jugs of water than usual? Our water tastes awful (I recycle the jugs)

Love the water here, and have gotten very used to it. When I visit my parents I can taste the cholorine in the water.

Corn on the cob is pretty cheap here too over the summer months and we eat it fairly often. I love it grilled on the bbq. Another summer favorite of mine is watermelon.
