Set in 1936, this film is based on the real-life story of the 1936 Olympic rowing team out of Washington state. As you may have figured out by now, I like to watch movies based on real life things or people. It just piques my interest even though many have a lot added to the story to make it more interesting for the film.
I must be honest; rowing is not what I would consider in the top 100 of my favorite sports and if I am brutally honest, I am not sure if you asked me to name sports, I might not even come up with it as a sport. Not to disregard the athletic ability to row in competition, just not one that I have ever paid any attention to.
Either way I took a chance on this film and thought if anything I might learn something. Aside from the real story which I knew nothing about I found out the movie is worth looking at. The story is interesting and drew me in wanting to learn and find out what happened. Even know it was a little slow at times and some of it could have been left out I think it did a decent job of setting the stage for the story.
The film is rated PG-13, my guess is, due to a few very minor language scenes and I’m not sure there is much more in it that could give it that rating.
I looked after watching it to see what kind of ratings it had and found it got very average ratings. Not really the type or subject of the movies I watch but I thought over all it was a good movie. I guess just because it is not what I normally would watch I would give it 3.75 stars out of 5.
As for the stars of the movie, I’ll be honest the only one I have ever heard of was Joel Edgerton who plays the coach. The main character, Joe, is played by Callum Turner. The rest did do a good job in my opinion of making me feel that were the real-life characters.
I know this is going to sound funny but one of the biggest things I didn’t like about the film was the main character’s hair. Maybe it’s just me but who’s hair is that color? I can’t say I know anyone with that color. It was just kind of distracting to me.
If you have 2 hours and 3 minutes take a look at this movie it you like rooting for the underdog or if you want to learn something about the 1936 Olympics or the rowing team.
