have to get somebody to tell us if my clothes dryer is safe

June 1, 2024 8:04am CST
Good morning fellow mylotters! I did a load of laundry yesterday (Friday) as I was bringing my clothes and towels out of the dryer, I had to reach into it to get something in the back. The light that comes on when it is done drying was still on and I noticed that the back of the dryer looks as if it is burned. I don't think the dryer should be so hot while it dries that the machine is burning. I did not realize the dryer looked burned or i would not have put the laundry in it My sister told me not to use it until we have somebody look at it and make sure it is safe. She doesn't know anything about those things and I don't either. I don't know who she would call. I wonder what qualifications that person would need? I don't know what their position would be called. Has your dryer ever looked as if it was burned?

Depends on what you mean by burned. It will have "dark spots," over time from use and from other things. When is the last time you checked the lint trap?

@LovesEverybody I have seen that kind of coloring. I don't think it is anything to worry about.

it is one of those dryers loaded from the front and at the back directly across from where I look into it from the front, and the color looks dark burnt orange. I just assumed it was burned. I am obsessive about cleaning the lint trap. Each time I put a new load in I make sure it is clean thank you so much for replying!

The dryer is very warm as soon as it finishes, but it does not look burned.

thank you so much! My good friend Kharla from mylot told me on the phone this morning that a filter needs to be changed which is why it is burned-looking. I had no idea a dryer even had a filter? that is something my dad would have taken care of. he may have changed while he was alive but didn't tell me maybe our handyman can take care of it. he does a good job in everything he does for us and our neighbors who recruited him when they saw him working outside my house

@LovesEverybody My dryer is different, I do not need to change the filter, but I have a part to take off and I need to clean it and remove all the lint. I am sure your handyman can take care of this job.

@LadyDuck we are not really sure. My sister suggested we get somebody to come give it a checkup. She turned it on for one or two minutes and didn't like how it sounded. I am probably going to call a store that sells dryers and ask who takes care of dryers to make sure they are working right

If you smell a burning, it's best to immediately unplug it from the socket so that nothing untoward happens and call someone who is an expert in checking.

thank you for the help! I didn't smell anything burning, but it looked like it. My sister is trying to figure out where my parents bought the dryer over 20 years ago

Ever since my uncle told me to clean the lint tray every time I use the dryer, I always do it. Mine don't looks burnt, but I was afraid of a piece of our dryer had been unraveling. I talked to my mother about it and she says it's safe. I also asked my great-aunt about it and says it is probably is safe. I hope to look at the manual of it soon to see what the piece is.

I am just like you with the lint tray. I clean it each time before I use it again. It is a rule in my house that I give myself that the lint tray has to be cleaned or the dryer can't be used

I read that you have a maintenance man there and quite possibly he will be able to help. I hope so.

@JudyEv thank you! I am hoping to call a store that sells dryers and call them. Or I might look on a search engine and see if there is a company who would check it out

my sister doesn't think it is burned however she put it on for a few minutes and said it sounds weird. I am going to ask her if she wants me to call around and ask if somebody can come to my house and give the dryer a checkup before I use it again. She did ask me who people in my area would call for something like that. I had no idea we don't know where my parents bought them so don't know who to call.

You could see if the handyman could look at it. Dryer's don't really cost that much though. I would probably just replace it. Better than having a fire.

I agree. My sister didn't seem to want the handyman to look at it. But she mentioned getting somebody to come to the house and check it to ensure it is okay. I was thinking of Lowes as there is one close across the river. there is no Home Depot anywhere around my house. Honestly, I don't think there is even one in my county I would be willing to get a new dryer but that is up to my sister. I think the microwave has been deteriorating and I have been using it that way for a year
