The Party Was a Success!

Hi, guys and gals! Last night was Saturday and party night. I'd spent about six months planning the surprise for my big sister's 50th birthday. Her actual birthday is in a couple of days. I'd had a dream in which I'd forgotten about the party, hadn't picked up the cake, the DJ hadn't turned up, and there were hardly any guests! Thankfully, that dream didn't come true. My eldest son came with me to pick up the cake I'd ordered. The cake was a basic jam sponge, which was delicious. The symbol on the cake is from 'Supernatural', as is the quote on the wooden fairy steps (which I made) that you can see in the image. The table decorations (not the balloons but the other bits) were made by my sister's partner's mum. My sister turned up about half an hour early and thought there weren't many people! There were only a few of us by then. More people came in dribs and drabs. Most came within the first half an hour of the actual start time, with a few others turning up a little later. I did worry about how many guests would turn up as, despite sending about 90 invitations, only a handful of people had responded. I'd catered or 50 people and didn't want that to go to waste either! I think there were between 35 and 40 guests in total. I spent most of the night dancing, although I was alone on the dance floor for much of that time I did try to get other people to dance. After most people had gone, there were four of us dancing together (me, my sister, her sister-in-law, and my best friend). We did have some guests that hadn't replied but I thought would probably be there. My parents came. I knew my dad would but my mum never wants to do anything. I think she was glad she went, though, as she got to see some of her side of the family that she hadn't seen for years. We had some surprise guests. I had invited my step-daughters, assuming they wouldn't come as they live so far away. We had a message from the eldest saying as much. She then turned up with her husband and their children as they'd driven almost 200 miles and had texted me from my in-laws' in my neighbouring town! My sister appreciate them being there, of course, but it was an amazing surprise for me and my husband. My husband had to leave the party early as he wasn't feeling well, and the little ones didn't want him to go - even the eldest, who is usually mean to him We had a DJ disco, which was good. My sister told him about the music she liked and specifically didn't like - he gave her a list of what I'd said, and said I did good! It was a good mix of mainly rock, 80s, reggae, a couple of silly songs, and one or two requests. I think everyone had a good time, even if it was mostly just me and the children doing all the dancing The party was meant to be a surprise but my sister had guessed, and some people had let it slip. However, we did manage to keep all the details secret (venue, guests, music). A couple of people said I had done well. When I got home, my husband told me I am a good sister for doing it all! I did have a long lie in today. I didn't get drunk (I had four drinks and was too busy dancing and socialising). Sadly, the boots I was wearing didn't make it home in one piece (they weren't new, but they hadn't been worn often in the five years I'd had them). I know that my sister has other things planned for her birthday week. I've taken the week off work so I'll be doing sometime with her tomorrow (Monday). She wants to see 'IF' at the cinema. Her partner has a surprise for her on Tuesday (which I think is a day out somewhere) then she and her partner are going to Wales for a couple of days (that was her main birthday gift from me). Then it's a concert. We did have an offer of seeing my uncle's band but he said we'd got a better offer with the Frankie Valli tribute That uncle is the one that married my dad's little sister last year. I think the party was the first time he and my dad had met! I had better get out of bed as it is afternoon here! I've got a couple of messed from my sister. Looks like she's opened her birthday cards already as she said to thank my husband for the drawings on her card (a squirrel and a moose, in other references to Supernatural). I also made her a keyring (well, I didn't make the keyring, I burnt a picture onto a wooden keyring - the picture was another Supernatural-related design). I hope you're all having a good weekend. I'm going to have a cup of tea and pick at some of last night's leftovers

I have said I'm not organising any more! But also that people now have just over 6 years to plan something just as awesome for my 50th

@pumpkinjam Haha, I can imagine you deserve a long break after pulling off such a spectacular event! It sounds like you’ve set the bar high for your own 50th—hopefully, your friends and family take the hint and start planning something equally fantastic for you. Good luck, and may it be every bit as memorable!

My sister said she was amazed when she walked in to the party. She'd guessed that there was a party but hadn't expected everything. She was a little disappointed that friends didn't turned up (I had invited them) but we have lots of family!

@jstory07 Sometimes there were family who couldn't be bothered to turn up while there were friends who did send apologies as they were away or working. My sister's best friend wanted to be there but had work at 5am after finishing a 48 hour shift. We forgave her for not coming to the party!

Thank you. My sister has said she had a really good time, as did the guests. Even my mum enjoyed it. She doesn't usually enjoy anything and I'd not expected her to turn up!
