This must be wildlife week at mi casa. This morning I saw a deer close up just behind the deck. It caught wind of Nico an I staring at it though and took off when I went to get my camera. They are funny and seem to show up here when I am not expecting to see them. Their territory is getting compressed a little bit as they are still building houses in this development. I can think of 2 or 3 that are being built now. and others that have recently been built. Traffic has built up here too, just in the development itself, although this road is still pretty quiet...you notice a lot of vehicles going in and out on the weekend.

When I have my window open at night I often hear wildlife prancing around. It scares me a little, although it didn't use to. I just don't want them trying to get into the window as there is some cat food set up by the bed. However, the human scent should scare them away. I think I will take that out of there actually. I never feed him there now.

@snowy22315 - Better not to keep the food near the window, some of them could not fear the smell of human. Better safe than sorry.

@snowy22315 Don't worry about their trying to get in through the window, there is strong enough human scent that they won't chance it. The most they remotely would do is check out the window and see you sleeping and decide that you need your rest, plus they don't much care for cat food anyhow, they like their meat fresh---like mice, rats, gophers etc. I sleep with the windows open and the wild animals could make in through my window no problem and they just keep on going to their favorite hunting ground. You're speaking to an old wilderness gal--I lived out in the woods for years.

I hate seeing so many developments sprouting up. It is stealing habitat from the wildlife and forcing them to do things that they normally wouldn't do to survive. Besides the fact that very often the development will sit empty for years, simply for the developer's desire for more money. I know of housing out here in California that is still empty-as well as business spaces (One being a empty K-Mart store. It's been empty for the past 7 years!), regular people can't afford to take the chance on opening a business and losing their investment and more. While we do have wild areas, it still doesn't fill the need of the wildlife and the roads that are through the areas so that the humans can drive through them and catch glimpses of the wildlife.
Get a disposable camera and keep it handy by the window. I wished I had mine when I spotted a teenaged raccoon come down the neighbor's fence one morning. He was priceless-and headed straight for the cat food dish that I have out for the neighborhood cats.

I couldn't easily share pics with a disposable camera.Besides I would never use the roll. When I said camera I meant the cellphone camera.

@snowy22315 I'm sorry...I live in both worlds. Digital and film. I need to find the chargers for my digital cameras so I can list the stuff I want to sell on Craig's List. I have sewing machines, thread, sewing sewing supplies, and more. I can't do yard sales where I live because of my lease, soooooo I do the next best thing. The only problem is listing the stuff with pictures. Sigh, life used to be a bit less complicated.

Occasionally a deer will stroll through the back of my house but they are mostly hiding around the cornfields. We have all the other critters (bunnies, foxes, possums, etc)

We haven't seen any deer; but we see their footprints on the front lawn quite often. I saw about 10 turkeys in someone's front yard this year. That was quite a thrill.

@BearArtistLady That's funny about the turkeys taking tests. What part of the US are you in if you don't mind my asking? You get to see a lot of different wildlife.

Your seeing the turkeys reminds me of when we bought our place out in the woods years ago. As we were driving out there was a huge sign posted by the side of the road that had printed on it: "Wild Turkey Testing Area". My Mom and I got a huge laugh visualizing a huge bunch of turkeys sitting at tables with pens in wings bent over their papers taking tests.
The testing worked, we ended up with lots of flocks of wild turkeys, which helped support the other wildlife that lived in the area. We soon were seeing wild pigs, mountain lions, bob cats, wolves and more. We still need to support the wildlife, even though our way of thinking is different than theirs.

There is a place in this state that has an elk herd, and I really want to see them. Fall is the best time. Maybe this year. I wanted to go last year.

We can't get over how what was once farmland is now a mass of new houses. I don't where all the occupants come from. Maybe they're all moving out of their parents' homes.
