Oh, the things I learn in researching these countdowns. Today’s song is one that I didn’t know was a cover! Whatever do you know? I shall explain as we go back to the magical year 1964 for another song that’s now 60. Doo Wah Diddy Diddy - Manfred Mann First, if you don’t remember this, don’t feel too bad. When Stripes was being filmed IN 1981 nobody in the cast knew the song except John Candy (Ox) and Conrad Dunn (Psycho), and they had to teach the song to everyone else! So if people didn’t know it just 17 years after the fact, I’ll give you a pass if you don’t know it 60 years on. Now, for the cover. This song is best known by Manfred Mann (the band who made the big comeback in 1977 making deuce in Springsteen’s “Blinded By the Light” sound like something else ). But the first version of the song was released a year earlier, by the girl group the Exciters. They were best known for “Tell Him.” While the Exciters’ version didn’t do well, Manfred Mann’s rendition was an international hit. Blame Beatlemania/the British Invasion, or whatever you want. An interesting post-script: after the success of the film Stripes, this song actually became a “marching song” on some bases in the Army! Doo Wah Diddy Diddy Written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich Recorded by Manfred Mann From The Manfred Mann Album, 1964 She looked good, she looked fine:

I like this song. I'd never heard of the film 'Stripes' before. I couldn't have told you who sang the songany. I didn't know it was Mannfres Mann, but didn't they mostly do covers anyway? I like a lot of older songs and am often aware of even obscure covers. I find Tommy James and the Shondells did earlier versions of several of my favourites from other people/bands! I also prefer Springsteen's version of 'Blinded by the Light'.

@FourWalls Dylan wrote and recorded it but Mannfred Mann released it first.

I think their three biggest hits were covers. “The Mighty Quinn” was originally by Bob Dylan.

I think Manfred Mann just had a better version of the tune. It happens with covers more than you think. Anyway, great tune!

It’s usually the version we hear first that sticks with us, although I’ll tell the world that Bonnie Raitt’s bluesy version of “Runaway” is amazing!

I DO remember the song...and when you mentioned it being done by The Exciters, I did not remember the group, but I remember hearing Women singing it...Yes...I am Old. LOL 70 well on my way to 71. I absolutely LOVED Stripes. I remember it was filmed at Fort Knox, and Louisville, KY. So Funny! Love your Countdown.

@FourWalls I used to live in KY, Lexington, but dated a guy from Radcliff, and we went to the Silver Spur in Louisville. Drove right by Ft. Knox...been over 35 years ago. Thanks for the info on the places they filmed it.

It’s one of their biggest hits, so I was surprised when I read that only two cast members of Stripes knew it.
