Town is a human settlement that is generally larger than villages and smaller than cities.
Country is a district part of the world, a nation with its own government.
Country intended as "the country side of a town" is another matter. It is a small settlements outside large urban areas.
What you read about U.S. is NOT correct, in Louisiana a town has a population of less than 4,999, so it depends which US state.

@nicegolden Country side is just a settlement outside a urban area, it does not matter if outside a city or a town.
