Digital Comp Sketch of Pirate Bear Completed

My digital sketch

The next step in this commission was to complete the comp (comprehensive) sketch for the client to approve before starting the final art. Since I can do a simple digital piece fairly quickly, I chose to do the comp sketch on my tablet. I drew the line art that you saw the last time and messaged the client to make sure that was what she had in mind. She liked it, but she did ask for his belly to really be emphasized more. Since that would probably obscure the skull and crossbones on the belt buckle, I asked if we should move that to the hat. She suggested adding it as a pendant on a thick gold chain around his neck. I also suggested adding a wide leather scabbard holder across his chest. I then made sure what colors she wanted for the bear's fur and his clothing. She loved the filigree detail that I had added to the pistol and asked for matching detail on the cutlass guard. I went ahead and added a background color to the illustration, but I'm not necessarily going to have that in the final art. I also signed obnoxiously large and wrote a copyright notice to protect the work somewhat, since it's being posted online. Upon seeing the finished comp, she made one last request that I make his eye larger and looking toward the viewer. As you can see, he now looks a lot less like an actual bear than he did in my rough draft, but if the client is happy, I'm happy. She made another payment now that the finished art will begin. Now that I have full approval from the client, I will be back with updates as the physical artwork takes shape!

That's magic! Really great. We always put a big sign across our endurance horse photos so they don't get used by others.
