Do you think that Donald Trump can get away with only a year or two in prison?

Michael Cohen, Donald Trump's former laywer and "fixer," was sentenced to something like three years in prison. I believe he served less that that, but a part of it may have been due to his health. Do you think that Donald Trump, after being convicted on 34 counts, can get way with as light a sentence as Cohen received? I mean no disrespect toward Michael Cohen. I may disagree with him politically, and for his his actions, but I believe he has shown at least SOME remorse for what he did Trump's sentencing could be based at leased in part on how much remorse he shows for his crimes, and on how much the Court feels he can be rehabilitated. Do you think he will be allowed (by his attorneys) to speak with the sentencing judge, and to show remorse and the potential for a change in behavior? This is one of the better summaries I have found out there in internet land. What do you think?

If he gets sentence and than becomes President he can always pardon himself. You know he will. What a messed up world we live in.

That is a huge concern. So many people say ‘No one is above the law’ but he evidently is in the eyes of many others.

Are you sure he can pardon himself for ALL of the crimes he has committed? I don't think so.

@MarieCoyle I have not gone down the "For which crimes could Trump pardon himself" wormhole. Perhaps @Xander6464 can provide some insights. I have several lawyer friends, but they're all East of me, and it is too late to call them.

Cohen was let out and allowed to finish his term on home confinement due to COVID much like Manafort was. He was remanded back to prison due to his book though which is another story. I doubt Trump will be sent to prison by Judge Marchan. I'd love to see it but I wouldn't bet on it. He has shown no remorse. He insults the judge, the AG, and the entire legal system every single day. The judge has already said that he doesn't want to put him in prison.

@NJChicaa I see him on podcasts too. Cohen's first book is worth a read. I don't know that I'll bother with the second.

It's hard to say how Trump's sentencing will compare to Cohen's, but remorse and potential for rehabilitation could play a role. Each case is unique, so we'll have to see how it unfolds.

@TheHorse Law and order.... right..... if that were true at all,.... crime wouldn't be where it is and our system wouldn't be broken.

@kaylachan Violent crime is down over the past few years. But it's still ridiculously high here in the US.

We will see if he can continue to do so. We have laws, and there are many "law and order" people out there, including me.

Trump will not go to Prison the Judge will never sentence him to Prison. About Coehn, he was sentenced to three years in federal prison in 2018. In February 2019, the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, disbarred him from practicing law in the state. In May 2019, he reported to the federal prison near New York. In November 2021, he completed his sentence.

The maximum sentence he can be given for those 34 charges is 4 years total. That is the total, not 4 years for each charge: they will all be served concurrently, not consecutively. He might have to serve 2 years of that, possibly only 18 months. That is if the Judge gives him the maximum allowable sentence.

The other cases are actually more serious than the first criminal trial. But their delay tactics are working, and we won't have verdicts until after the election.

Each of his counts could get him a 4-year sentence. I believe that is what they said. So who knows what the sentence will be. Cohen's was a first defense too so it's hard to say. I wish July 11th would hurry and get here. Did you see where they may drop his documents charge in Florida? It is all so crazy with more and more changes.

I was chuckling when I read that remorse and potential for rehabilitation were two of the criteria for a lighter sentence. I don't think Trump would allow his lawyers to prepare a written statement showing remorse.

I honestly don't think he will serve any jail time at all. And if by chance he does receive time in the slammer, it won't be for that long.

While Cohen’s remorse played a role in his lighter sentence, Trump’s case might be more complex, with less predictability in how the court will weigh these factors. It’s a fascinating situation to watch unfold.
