Dementia

My job involves spending time with people that suffer with different forms of dementia. What an absolutely cruel disease it is. It affects people so differently, but I love each and every person that I take care of. They all have different characteristics that make them who they are. People should never forget that these people had lives of their own before dementia took over, and it is our job to take care of them and try and remind them of the life they had before dementia. I couldn't think of a better job to do, I feel so rewarded and humbled to be able to do this job. Sometimes it can be challenging, of course! But there is always a reason why it becomes so challenging, and taking the time to understand a person will help to uncover those challenges and form a relationship of trust and bond with that person.. even though someone has dementia they may become familiar with you.

We see a reflection of our lives in others. This means that observing people at an older age tells the younger generation of the journey that lies ahead.

My job is on the customer service/admin side of social care so, while I'm not directly involved, I am very aware of dementia and how differently it can affect people. I don't think I could do what you do. I've spoken to people who have been trying to get help while being shouted at by the person with dementia or where they can simply no longer cope, as much as they want to. You have to be a really patient and special person to care for people with such a cruel disease.

Are you a nurse too? Dementia broke my heart in healthcare. I moved to dialysis to avoid it. It is for me one of the most challenging cases to take care of. Some people with dementia can be very endearing and I would say some can be quite scary.

My husband has totally lost her "short term" memory. He remembers the past, but he asks the same questions over and over every day, because he forgets the present as it happens.I am happy to be there for him.

Helping others is its own reward, isn't it? I think caring for others in the health field is a very noble career. Glad you don't see your career as just a job.
