Does Anyone Crochet Or Knit for Mental Health?

United States
June 9, 2024 2:56pm CST
As someone who loves to crochet and knit, and who owns a small online shop, creating by hand, especially crochet and knitting, helps keep my mind at ease. I have ADHD, OCD, depression and anxiety, whew that's a lot of mental issues. When I crochet, which I do more than knit, I feel happy, and at total peace. It's almost like a way of meditating. Does anyone else do this? How to you set your mind at ease?

It is one of those things that just works, especially if you are creating the same stitch.

I have a friend who crochets to ease her anxiety. I always wish I knew how.

I have several tutorials on my website to learn how to crochet. I'm not sure I can post my website link in the comments but if you wish to learn, do message me and I'll send you the link to my website.

I don't crochet. I did try it but didn't find it interesting enough to learn to do it properly! I do knit occasionally. Not so much for mental health as for something different between other hobbies I'm finding that my hands/fingers get quite painful so I don't spend that much time on my various crafts - knitting cross-stitch, fretwork, pyrography. I very occasionally do glass painting, and I have a candle-making kit waiting for me (that's something I've not done before and don't know when I'll get round to it). I don't do my crafts specifically for mental health but they do relax me and give me feelings of satisfaction once I finish a project.

Sometimes even reading a book or just sitting out on the patio helps too. Or watching a movie or favorite show. It's different for everyone. Thank you for taking time to comment. I appreciate it.

I ease my mind by writing journals on Devianttart and look at classic comedy shows.

@hellobunny My material is basically nicknaming sports stars with names of my favorite characters I grew up watching.

I love that! I used to write myself. Classic comedy shows are definitely the best, I prefer them to what we have now, not that some shows of now aren't great, some are but yes, classic comedy shows are the best. I would love to see your writing. I may get back into that too.

Thank you for sharing! I also find solace in creative activities like gardening and going out for a bike ride. It's inspiring to hear how crochet and knitting bring you peace. It's amazing how these activities can feel like meditation, isn't it? Thanks for starting this conversation!

Thank you for that! Yes, creativity is definitely a form of meditation and expression. My husband and I used to garden, we would sit out in the garden, and it just felt so relaxing. Or even going for a nice walk in the evening. Yes, crochet and knitting do bring me peace and the most joy, also writing and sometimes, as crazy as this is, gaming. For some reason, gaming also relaxes me a bit. I am glad this conversation is gaining attention.

I don't set my mind at ease. Only sleep makes me feel relaxed. You are lucky to find a hobby you enjoy.

Thank you, sometimes meditation helps too. You don't have to have a hobby. But sleep, ahh yes, that one I need more of.

I think it's cool you knit and crochet. It's also good exercise for one's fingers. I like to write in my journal to relax. I especially love writing poetry. It's my passion

Crocheting can be healing. I can get lost in another world while crocheting. And I can even forget to eat and forget the time. So if anyone wants to lose weight, start crocheting. It really does help. For me at least.
