A Sense of Humor

Earlier this week, I was eating at a restaurant, and quite frankly I was a little dehydrated from being out in the Florida heat all day. So when the waitress asked me what I wanted to drink, I immediately said tequila. Just kidding, I asked for a glass of water. She then asked if I wanted a straw with my water, to which I said yes. Then she asked me if I wanted regular or large. I told her I was very thirsty, so I wanted a large one.
As you can see from the photo, she brought me water in the tiniest glass they had, along with the biggest straw they had. When she brought it to me, I laughed and said "What's this?" She said that I asked for a glass of water with a large straw, so she brought me a large straw. Of course I meant a large glass of water, not a large straw, but I appreciated her sense of humor. And yes, she did bring me a large glass of water right after that.
Sometimes it's the little things that make my day. I couldn't help but smile after that.
Have you ever had someone serve you with a sense of humor?
Oh, and I was a little disappointed that she never brought that tequila shot I wanted! haha

@porwest It’s amazing that more people in the service industry whose paychecks depend on tips don’t understand that their attitude plays a big part in their earning potential.

She sure did! And it probably came out more than an extra 5%. I tipped her very well.

@moffittjc Watching you drinking made me thirst, but I also only had water... another couple of hours before a more serious drink.

@LadyDuck You can drink water all day long in order to pre-hydrate in preparation for the serious drinks that come later!

I'm not even sure if they served tequila in that restaurant! Also, I didn't really ask for any, I just thought about it in my mind. haha

She was so fun to interact with. She kept up the humorous antics all throughout our meal. When she brought napkins to the table, she just threw them at us instead of placing them on the table, then told us that was about the best service we could expect from her (she was joking, she provided excellent service the entire night).

@AmbiePam When another family sat at the table next to us, she came over to them and said loudly that she hoped they were a better group than us. She pointed at our table and said we were the worst customer's ever. Of course she said it with a big smile on her face! I couldn't help but laugh.

@moffittjc that little glass is really cute and it's too bad you couldn't keep it. Did you keep the straw? Sounds like you had a really good time

@Marilynda1225 I know, that little glass is awesome! I really wanted to keep it, but they wouldn’t let me. But yes, I did keep the straw!

I asked her if I could keep the tiny glass as a souvenir, she told me no but that I could keep the straw if I wanted. She kept me laughing the entire meal.

@TheHorse Sadly, though, it shouldn't be so hard to find them, yet in reality it kinda is.

Love the photo. Usually waiters/waitresses are short-staffed and serious about their work. They are pleasant enough; but can't take the time to have fun. Have a great day.

I agree that they are often short-staffed and overworked. But a lot of their demeanor can be a result of their attitude. They can choose to be upset, angry, indifferent, etc, or they can choose to be fun, lively and interactive. The ones who complain that they didn't make any money in tips are usually the ones who provided rotten service; they have no one to blame but themselves.

@LindaOHio Lucky you. It seems most people I encounter these days are rude and nasty, but often because they are overworked, underpaid, and mismanaged by their bosses.

Not only does it make it go better for everyone, but at the end of the day you feel really good about yourself and the impact/impression you left on all the others around you.
When I'm at work, I choose to be playful and interactive with customers, sometimes too much. But nobody can walk out after interacting with me and say that I ruined their day. No, I go out of my way to make someone's day.

Thanks. I like to be light-hearted and fun-loving as much as I can, and I really enjoy and appreciate when I see others being that way as well.

now that's funny. I remember an incident that came out funny but was not meant to be funny. When mom and I were still living in NYC we were at our favorite restaurant and ordered two vodka martinis straight up. We got out drinks and took a sip, Mom looked at me and I looked at her, It was pure vodka, I called the waitress and told her she had forgotten something, She looked confused and I said these are not martinis but vodka straight up. In the meantime the bartender who had measured out the vodka in the glasses was going to pour the vodka in the shaker to mix and was wondering what had happened to the vodka, Well in the end it was like a Marx Brother move but came out all right,

I'm not sure I would have complained about receiving nothing but vodka straight up! haha. But, like you, I would have wondered why I didn't get a martini when that's what I ordered, so I probably would have questioned it (but not complained about it).

I agree. It just blows my mind that so many people in the world walk around with hatred and anger and indifference, when something as simple as a smile or a hello can really make a difference in someone else's life. I know life can beat us down at times, but our attitudes and how we respond to life is our choice, and bringing a little humor into a situation can really work wonders. It's just too bad that so many people get offended by humor of any sort these days.

She did take a chance that you share her sense of humor. Because unless you both are already acquainted, her actions could be misconstrued as rude manners or her being discourteous to customers. Among her antics, I particularly dislike the "napkin throwing".

I absolutely love her sense of humor!!! I got a super laugh for the start of my day, and I want to thank both you and the waitress for it. In fact it kind of makes me want to visit Florida and that restaurant.
My laughing at your discussion even made Petey move off my lap!

I'm glad my discussion made you laugh! Humor is often contagious, and spreads from one person to another, like a chain reaction. We certainly need more humor in this world!

They also did a funny thing with the ketchup. There was no ketchup on any of the tables. So the first person who asked for ketchup, the waiters would go into the kitchen and bring out about 20 bottles of ketchup and put it all on the person's table. Then, if someone at another table would ask for ketchup, the servers would all yell for you to get up and take all 20 bottles of ketchup to the next table that asked for it. It was pretty funny watching diners have to keep moving the ketchup bottles around from table to table.
