Here Comes Summer

You know I think summer is a season that has more enjoyable summer songs than any other. I always looked forward to summer, As a child because school ended for a while, as a teen because my friends and I spent time at the beach, and as an adult, I loved being a camp counselor at our Latvian summer camps in both the US and in Canada. Now you know my story about living in Latvia very well and I have now embraced both the happy and sad memories of my summers there but have chosen autumn as my favorite month now. For all the beautiful colors and for the cooler temps. Did you know that the word summer is a very old word? It was first recorded in the year 900. It comes from an Old English word, sumor. The word is related to zomer in Dutch, Sommer in German, and sama in Sanskrit meaning year. Around 1300 it became an adjective and we got terms like summer camp, summer school, and summer resort all recorded in the 1800s. Officially as you know summer begins on June 21 coinciding with the summer solstice – one of the longest days of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Summer ends on September 23 the autumn equinox when the sun is at its zenith at or directly above the equator and spring arrives in the Southern Hemisphere. I got used to it, but it was confusing for a while when I asked someone I was chatting with online if they had hot weather and would reply, What hot weather? Snow is falling. Oops, I forgot who I was talking to in what part of the world

Same as @Juliaacv, I prefer autumn and spring, I am not a fan of summer. I did not know the origin of the word summer, as I am Italian we call summer "estate" that comes from Latin aestus that means to burn (of a fire).

@RasmaSandra Real estate is called "immobiliare" in Italian, English and Italians are very different.

@LadyDuck I understand the burn part because summers can be hot but if I did not know the meaning I would think they were talking about real estate like a property,

I am a minority when I say this, but I prefer the autumn and spring seasons over summer and winter. I think that the history of summer is interesting.

@RasmaSandra I love autumn it seems like the weather that we get then is less humid but still quite warm enough to enjoy many outdoor activities.

Absolutely! Summer holds so many cherished memories for so many of us. It's wonderful to hear about your experiences and how you've embraced the changing seasons. Autumn truly has its own magic with those beautiful colors. And yes, the confusion with different hemispheres can lead to some amusing moments!

@RasmaSandra Maybe you can find ways to bring a touch of those seasons into your life, like enjoying seasonal treats or decorating your home to match the season you miss?

@annierose it is an idea I will think about it. Otherwise I look at my window at two green trees always and at the back of the house the palm trees and nothing else, One Christmas if I had the money I have an urge to fill the yard with artificial snow

@annierose what I hate now in Florida is that I don't get four seasons and I even miss snow in winter

Well, and we're getting the rain we should have had in the spring. Better later then never.

Fall is my favorite season as long as the temperature is around 60-75. This summer seems like it's going to be a scorcher. I can't take extreme heat or cold. Interesting summer history. Have a good day.

Thank you for sharing the facts about my favorite season since it is time for me to enjoy time off from school when I was younger.
