Funny. We have the lentil (masoor dal), with tomatoes, and leafy vegetables. It is mandatory curry every week. On Tuesday I prepared masoor dal with yellow cucumber and tomatoes. So kinda, masoor dal is a very regular part of our meals. Sometimes I prepare sambhar. Next week that will be on menu. Bottle gourd, we prepare with moong dal. Urad dal every day almost in idlis.

The only dal my family has used just individually has been moong. My mother-in-law would make a simple dish of rice and toor dahl mixed together. She called this kitcheri. We also have a very special dish with all the dals mixed with whole wheat and rice all cooked together. Some call this haleem. We call it kitchda, not sure of spelling. I have recipes for sambar but have not made it according to the recipes. I often wonder if it is not the same dish as our kitchda/haleem, but just a different dialect.

@capirani Kitchda...LOL. New word coined. LOL
I wish more people would have sense of humor. Then the world would be a fun place. LOL
Instead we are all after money and land. Sigh.
Yeah Khichadi is a very tasty dish...healthy too.
Haleem, as far as I know includes beef. But then........ in India, beef is not eaten..(legally). LOL.
People are crazy. Ok...so cow is worshipped. Fine. Why do we drink its milk? Its milk is for its little ones. Right? That is oh so nasty. Kinda, I will tell you, you are so nice, now give me your bank balance. LOL I am a nasty one...I think like that. I don't eat any meat, and even eggs. I am also a Hindu. But if something seems odd, I do dare to utter it...ever so gently. LOL

That is one of the simplest menu. I agree a mixed dal dish is both yummy and healthful.

I make dal with mixed lentils. Here I use dry toor, masoor, urad, chana, moong, and most recently began adding horse dal. It is a favorite for me and my family. I have had it with vegetables before at someone else's house. I have made it myself with peanuts, or zucchini squash. But normally I make it just as it is and tomato paste included.
