Got a Flock of Chickens

Canada
July 1, 2024 4:42pm CST
Just about finished another major home project. I managed to scavenge most of the materials to make a secure chicken coop and fenced-in run. There is still work to do but the laying flock is already moved in. In the photo, I'm holding L'il Bit who we're told is a rooster. He's just a juvenile while the four hens are all mature. They decided not to accept him and beat the crap out of him. We had to separate him until he is fully healthy again. That's not very convenient but we'll succeed in reintroducing him in the long run. This isn't the first time we've done this. It just decided it wasn't going to be easy.

Aniimals are merciless if they take a set against one of their own.

Fortunately, this isn't new to us or we would have lost him. My daughter spotted the trouble in time to intervene. I know we could have easily replaced him but I hate losing a bird that way.

@koopharper I had a black hen take a set against a white chicken. She wouldn't have a bar of him. The other chicks were brown or black but he was the only white one.

Good for you I am sure the chickens appreciate having a nice coop to live in and a yard to run. I sure hope the hens will accept him with time, Poor guy must make him anxious,

It's all going to work out. It's just slowed us down a bit. At least the birds are safe from predators which is a really big issue back in the bush here.
