Making artificial nests for endangered ospreys

We all know that many species are facing extinction or are already extinct. One that has been struggling to cope over the last few years is the eastern osprey (Pandion cristatu). They are found on the coast of Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines and Indonesian Islands. Pairs use the same nest site year after year. In South Australia on Eyre Peninsula, Kangaroo Island and Yorke Peninsula, the population has dropped to just 50 pairs. Loss of habitat and coastal disturbance have impacted on nest sites. Now, experts and locals are installing artificial nesting platforms in these areas. Over four years, eighteen of these platforms have been put in place. Two thirds are now occupied by pairs of ospreys and 14 chicks have been hatched from these nests. Many of the nests are lifted into place by helicopters. A paddle-boarder who regularly goes under on of the beacons holding a nest calls out to the ospreys and they call back to him. You can check out more here: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-07-02/osprey-endangered-birds-artificial-platforms-installed-nests-sa/104042676 The photo shows a sea-eagle on West Australia’s south coast.

I'm sorry the osprey is facing extinction. I hope the efforts they're making with the artificial nests helps them repopulate.

@JudyEv Is it the same species of osprey that DianneN has made friends with? Orville?

@just4him Probably not as they don't normally occur in that part of the world.

It's looking good so far. It's such a pity to see a species become extinct.

@JudyEv There is no dearth of birds here. I was only talking about sparrows. You can hear the cacophoney of birds in my garden

We are gradually seeing a few more birds here which is good. Gradually gardens are becoming more established and the birds are slowly moving in.

@JudyEv It is a good thing the ospreys are not that fussy about their nests.

@changjiangzhibin89 Yes, I'm a bit surprised that they don't avoid such places.

The nests are being used so that's a very good indication that this is a good step.

That is a great idea and I hope those nests work to help endangered ospreys. This is my first time to see a sea-eagle.

@JudyEv I remember Orville and also the photos that she posted of Orville. There is a large "population" of those ospreys in Florida, where they live all year round.

DianneN used to write about Orville the osprey but that would have been a different species.

It's so cool that the birds are using the man-built nests - or at least nesting sites. The birds still bring in their sticks and twigs to furnish the nest.

Isn't it just? I would feel so chuffed if birds used a nest I'd provided.

I'm glad this is helping. The problem though is lack of habitat, not just nests sites specifically, they still need to find food of course!

I'm sure that's so but there wasn't any comment about lack of food. Hopefully there is enough for the time being.
