If you make it, what kind of lettuce do you use? I am making it when friend comes down, tomorrow..but I only have romaine lettuce. I have always had it with iceberg and made it at home with that too. I looked online though and some of the recipes take romaine so I guess it should be fine. What do you like to put on your taco salad?

We have done both - the romaine and the iceberg. Our taco salads have lettuce, black beans, either ground beef, ground turkey, or chicken pieces, green onion, cilantro, small diced onions, cheese, salsa or pico de gallo, and either avocado pieces or guacamole.

Sounds good. I usually just make it like I would a taco. I was thinking about getting those tostada shells but I opted for some hard taco shells I can break up. It was cheaper and less calories.

@snowy22315 Yah, essentially it's an open taco . I forgot to mention too that we might have tortilla chips on the side. I don't know what it's called, but there are big circular corn chip things (size of a tortilla) . . . maybe for tostadas? I've seen folks break those and use 'em instead of "chips".

I use romaine lettuce mostly. I can get it already shredded so that I don't have to do that. I love taco salad.

I am not sure I have seen it shredded except in those mixed lettuce salad packages. I buy mine from Costco and comes with 4 big heads.

@capirani I haven't thought of wraps but there is an oriental one I like to make.

@snowy22315 I buy it in heads once in awhile for making wraps of the leaves, but I prefer the shredded. Yes, it comes in the bags in the salad mix section of the grocery.

@LadyDuck I bought ground turkey for this salad, but they are pretty interchangeable here. Turkey is cheaper.

@snowy22315 Mixed green salads are very popular here, but with no tortillas. Sometimes we add chicken or ham to the salad, never ground beef.

The only taco salad I've ever had has been from Wendy's. Have a good day.

I truly do prefer Romaine. If I cannot find it, I will sometimes buy Greenleaf lettuce, which is similar. Iceberg is ok, but definitely not my favorite. Did you know that the lettuces with darker green leaves have a ton more vitamins in them than the pallid iceberg? It's true...I like Romaine better anyway, just because I feel like it has more crunch to it. But I will eat iceberg in a pinch, of course.

I knew that. Usually the darker green a vegetable is the better it is for you .think kale and spinach. I like romaine but I only buy it at Costco. You can several large heads for maybe four bucks

@snowy22315 I often get Romaine at Costco, you are so right, it's fresh and a lot less than the grocery.

Oh we don't have cabbage or cucumber in our taco salad. Also, instead of cukes in cabbage..we have carrots..like a coleslaw.
