Welcome to America. What sentence do you think is appropriate for an armed robber?

I have not been robbed at gunpoint since I've lived in California.
But an older couple from New Zealand was, in Orange County, and the wife wound up dead, run over by the suspects in a car.
Had you heard about this one?
I gather the suspects were captured after a chase. One of them, in his 20s, had a previouos arrest for armed robbery.
If he had a previous arrest for armed robbery, why was he not in prison?
What do you think is a proper sentence for armed robbery? I would be OK with 30 years. I have no idea what it is now. In 30 years, an 18-year-old would be 48 hopefully old enough to have done some reading in prison and to have mellowed a bit.

Happy 4th of July from the US!

@TheHorse They shouldn't be just sitting around, but made to work for their food.

Armed robbery, or murder. That driver had to know she was standing there, but ran her down. These criminals shouldn't be allowed to drive a vehicle or even walk the streets!

@kobesbuddy Yep. I'd even be OK with a firing squad. But don't tell my Liberal friends.

@TheHorse And this couple, they were innocent bystanders. They were simply visiting California! Who do they meet up with? spineless criminals!

I guess what is lacking in Prisons nowadays are the proper reform programs for each individual prisoner, since I guess each criminal has different circumstances why they are there. That is why I also think that reforming a criminal takes time since not everyone is given the right treatment to reform them inside prison.

These young hooligans are awful. The average sentence for armed robbery is 6 - 12 years. And if one ran over the wife that will pay for that as well. If they have other charges too then they won't be seeing the outside for many years to come.

We been to that exact spot at that mall . . . it's a beautiful outdoor mall in a great area . . . which goes to show this can happen anywhere. I don't know what would be "proper", but for sure a LONG time . . . not only was it for armed robbery, but a person was killed.

@TheHorse There appears to be so many who should still be in prison, but for some reason they were let out. Why - I don't really know (is it because of the ultra progressive DA whom they say is too lenient on punishment for crimes?). We do hear about such situations all too often, out here anyway - these people should never have been let out - they obviously have not rehabilitated - many end up committing the same crimes. Should they serve a longer sentence for the 2nd time - perhaps - but then there is the issue of overcrowded prisons as it is - so I don't know what the solution is. Maybe we need the space of a deserted island or another planet to help with these long term sentences.
