To save the spotted owl from extinction, U.S. wildlife officials are contemplating a plan to deploy trained shooters to kill almost a half-million barred owls in the West Coast forests that are crowding out their smaller cousins. I love owls; and I think this is criminal. What do you think? Not much for dinner (so stinking hot and humid, it’s hard to have a “heavy” dinner), just soup and cheese and pears. Chicken taco salad for lunch. And yogurt!

@LindaOHio — got a roofing nail in a tire, but thankfully I saw it before it flattened the tire. There’s a tire place next to where I eat, so no real inconvenience. (Of course, I haven’t paid for the tire repair yet…)

I also think that it is criminal, humans should stop messing up with natural wildlife.

If nature says that the owls will become extinct, then so be it.

@LindaOHio There is always a reason for everything in nature. If we continue to mess up and pollute, soon humans will be an endangered species.

@LadyDuck Yes, that's a definite possibility as is the fact that we will ruin our planet beyond repair.

A zoo expert I used to listen to said sometimes animals become extinct due to nature, and not because of the actions of human beings. If this is the course of nature, as much as I hate for a species to disappear, I don’t know that we should interfere, especially by slaughtering other animals. Yesterday, I had chicken and slaw wontons, grapes, and some cranberry trail mix.

I have mixed feelings about things like this. We share habitat, and even sometimes "cleaning out" nuisances is met with some thought that maybe this isn't right. Sometimes we just need to let nature be nature. For dinner I cooked pork steaks on the grill and slathered them with a little bit of Lille's barbecue sauce. On the side we had baked beans and fried potatoes.

There are other options than killing them, like sterilization and relocation. I do not like to hear of thousands of any animal being put down.

That's really a great shame that so many of one species need to be culled. It would be great if there were some other way.
