I May Be Tight, But I Am Also Determined

Sometimes the art and magic of having money is not spending it. I know. Sounds like rocket science, right? Some people call me cheap. Maybe that's true to an extent. I certainly do not enjoy needlessly parting with my money just because. I prefer the terms "resourceful" and "frugal." They just seem to fit better, and personally, I think they just have a better ring to them. Take a simple can crusher. I bought the one I have now in May of 2022 for about $18. It's first breakdown was a couple of months ago when the bottom support bar for the seat busted. I found something to make it work, although it had a few issues. But nothing I could not deal with. Then the seat was becoming bent and too low making it almost impossible to crush the cans properly, or making them want to launch out of the crusher instead of properly crush. No worries. I put an L bracket under the seat to remedy that. But it was bending from the pressure of the cans being crushed. Still not thwarted, a cut a board to size and jammed it under the crusher seat so that it couldn't go anywhere and voila! The can crusher works again like a charm. Of course, all of this does not go without my wife shaking her head while at the same time shouting at me frustratingly, "My God. You are such a tight ass!" To which I remind her of the luxuries we enjoy because of that. I can replace it for about $20. But that's not the point. Why spend $20 if I can make what I have work? Sure, maybe I had to do some extra work to make it work. Sure, maybe it caused me a little frustration. But for now I saved $20, and that's all that matters. I'm no fool and I'll be damned if I will so willingly and easily part with my money. I like to think that's part of the reason I have it. Tight ass or not.

You could always do it the old-fashioned way....crush the cans with a sledge hammer like my grandfather did! lol

@porwest It would save you a trip to the gym, so you crush cans to earn money, and save on gym membership fees at the same time!

If your lifestyle works for you, then why should we criticize? Our can crusher has been in the box on the floor next to the door to the garage for several years now. That's how our life goes. Sigh. Have a good weekend.

lol. If my back would allow, I'd save even more money by doing it the way I used to, which is to just crush them with my foot. Those days are long gone, though.

@LindaOHio Not anymore for me. Screws my back up but good. Not just the crushing them part but bending to pick them up. lol

In many ways I believe I am frugal and resourceful like you. I don't mind people calling me cheap.

Technically I don't either. But I do think there is a slight difference between cheap and frugal. I could be wrong.

It is question of time vs effort in such scenarios. If you believe effort is important, then yes you have saved $20. Considering the fact you have time in this case, it is definitely a logical one. We definitely need to be frugal when we are not super duper rich ( I do believe that most of those super dupers are frugal ). Saving money is definutely a great act. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
