These societies lasted for a long time, even longer than the United States is now 238 years old. What if the father is bipolar and won't stop screaming all day and all night? What if the father is violent toward the mother or molests the daughters? Doesn't the mother have the right to take her children away from these types of situations? She shouldn't be punished for protecting her children. She should be able to get a divorce and have the right not to get married again to have "tax" breaks.
