Okay, tell me you haven’t heard of THIS guy. . We continue on a tour of Texas through its musical sons and daughters with someone who’s definitely in the top five of most iconic names of musicians of this era.
Willie Nelson
See you tomorrow.
What can I say about Willie? Well, other than he can’t sing. Seriously, he’s always had a more-talk-than-sing feel to his singing. Even in the songs he wrote, like “Hello Walls” and “Crazy,” there’s a “monologue” feeling to them. And, honestly, that’s one of the things that makes his music so great.
Another thing is that you can’t really categorize him. Sure, he’s country. Ain’t NO doubt about that. But listen to the song he did with Ray Charles (“Seven Spanish Angels”)…a lot of soul in it. He also has a jazz feel in a lot of his songs, in that he never does a song the same way twice. (A jazz musician friend of mine said that’s improvisation and the backbone of jazz.)
He’s a legend. And he’s a Texan, through and through.
Wille Nelson
Born Wille Hugh Nelson
April 29, 1933, Abbot (age 91)
HALLS OF FAME: Country Music, Rock and Roll, Nashville Songwriters, Songwriters, Texas Country Music, Austin City Limits, National Agricultural
Here’s one of my favorite Willie songs, “Bloody Mary Morning” (and I hope I don’t have to say “Linda? NO!” ):

Willie is cut from a different cloth; and his singing doesn't bother me. Have a good day.

My ex loved Willie Nelson, through and through! Popular, yet his voice isn't that great.

Lots of great songwriters who aren’t necessarily great singers.

Ah, Willie my Willie he as done plenty for country music but I still wish he lived at least till 100. Always blubber when I hear Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, The best combination is wasting away again in Margaritaville and then waking to a Bloody Mary Morning

Buffett had a reference to a Bloody Mary in a song, and I credit Willie for that.
