My daughter come over for dinner

My oldest daughter who is 20 moved out in mid June. She lives with her boyfriend in an apartment maybe a half mile from my house. I’m lucky she stayed home as long as she did and even luckier she was able to find an apartment so close by. Today she came over for dinner. She has sensory processing disorder and we think she also has autism but was never tested for it. When she lived home she couldn’t stand eating at the table with us all so after she turned 18 she either ate after we were all done or took her plate to her room. It drove me nuts. So I wasn’t sure how she would do tonight coming back for dinner especially since our house was sweltering. One less person here with my stepson in the marines. She did great and had lots to talk about. I made meatloaf, fettucine alfredo, cheese and bacon potato rounds, cream cheese corn and served a store bought cheese danish for dessert. Photo is pretty flowers I saw back in April. Pansies I think.

I think many do not like crowds even without having any ailment

@allknowing I’m not a fan of crowds but 6 people in a small kitchen seems like she could have dealt with it. Now there is just 5 when she comes so there is more room.

@allknowing after she turned 18 I let her eat in her room before that she had to tough out eating with us. We have to try to work through things that are hard for us not just avoid everything that isn’t helpful.

@shaggin There are many types of personalities and they need not be ill to be the way they are. I would leave her alone.

I'm glad you had such a good meal with your daughter. Your meal sounds scrumptious! I sometimes buy Stouffer's frozen meatloaf when I have a craving for meatloaf. I love the flowers in your picture! Did you plant them? Mommy loved to garden and Daddy got to pick the flowers, he always chose red ones.

@Loveseverybody my sister doesn’t know how to cook and her fiancé is mean to her and was awful about one she tried to make recently. She is coming over in a half hour and I am going to teach her how to cook meatloaf from the recipe I always use. I saw the flowers while I was out I didn’t plan them no.

@shaggin I can't cook either. But mostly I am unable to cook because I am petrified of using the stove, oven, and toaster so I do not use any of those. You are so sweet teaching your sister to make meatloaf!

That sounds so nice and very similar to my oldest. She's 18 and lives less than half a mile from me, it's such a blessing! I'm so glad your daughter lives close by too and y'all had dinner together.

@Lovingmybabies that’s great she lives so close especially with you having grandbabies you want to spend time with as well. I moved out when I was 18 but it still seems so young now to me as an adult myself.

@jstory07 thank you. I went to visit her briefly today at the thrift store where she works. I invited her for dinner but she was going out to a friends house.

I am happy that it went well. My younger daughter is a very bright girl ( going to university from next month) and is on spectrum. I also get to meet many autistic people in my profession as special educator and counselor.

@shaggin Yes, very true. That's why we say that if you met one Autistic person, you have just met one Autistic person. You can't generalise things.

I look back at my first husband's younger brother and wonder if he had a sensory processing disorder. At the time, in the early 1970's that was not a recognized thing, but he was like this. He could not eat at the table if everyone was there.

@GardenGerty I cannot stand the sound of people chewing with their mouths open or licking their fingers both of which my stepson did when he moved in. I broke him of the habit of chewing with his mouth open but he and his father still lick their fingers.

@AmbiePam she used to tell me all about her day at work each day when I picked her up. I missed that. It was nice when she came over for dinner and she talked about it.

@snowy22315 tonight my husband wanted to do a baked potato bar. He made the toppings and I got the easy part of making the potatoes and a fruit salad to go with dinner. My son doesn’t like baked potatoes but I invited my daughter and her boyfriend so she came for dinner again.

It's hard for many of us to understand and cope with those with autism or those types of disorders. I'm glad you had a nice visit.

@Judyev I think my kids get it from me so I do understand some of their issues. I look forward to seeing her. We haven’t been doing our Monday outings as her and her boyfriend get groceries on Sundays .

How did the dinner went? Does she ate with you on the table already? I'm glad that you know she's doing just great even after having a disorder.. It is quite fulfilling

@maramm I love when I get to see her. It will never be the same as her living at home but she isn’t far thankfully. Yesterday she came with me to a parade in town and I gave her a bag of gifts I had been saving up as a housewarming gift for her first apartment.
