Time to make croutons again!

I wrote a while back about the big fuss one member was making about trying to pick a suitable date for our ‘toad patrol’ group picnic. I wondered whether he would make such a big deal about the food. Well the answer turned out to be no, because he point blank refused to do any more, he thought his effort at arranging a poll to choose a date was more than enough! So it was back to me to sort out some food again, but I did it anyway because I wanted everyone to get together. To cut a long story short, it was a big success. A lot of people came, and all said what an enjoyable evening it was. And there was plenty of food but at the same time not too much, so very little left over, except a couple of loaves of bread – a French baguette and some sort of multigrain cob – which were shoved into my hands as we cleared up. The family couldn’t eat that much bread that quickly and anyway we already had some, so it was time to make croutons again. I cubed it all up, tossed with a little oil and some seasoning and baked until crispy. This or breadcrumbs is definitely the best use for excess bread, especially when a tiny packet of ready-made croutons costs about 50p! Breadcrumbs need to be stored frozen, but croutons just need an airtight container so that’s easier and saves freezer space. The only downside is they’re so tasty and convenient it’s easy to snack on them! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2024.

There are worse snacks than that. I agree, it is such a nice way to eliminate waste.

That's a really good idea. Mostly we're able to freeze any bread we happen to come by.

Always a great way to use up bread, and I guess it's a plus that it was virtually free to boot.
