Somebody questioned me

Not one of you- somebody else questioned my choice of buying a house and not renting and not settling on a condo, either. Made me think. Made me grateful that I can head out my back door, down some concrete steps and boom- plunk my rump on a common little yard swing. I can sit there, listen to the highway traffic across the lake behind some houses or pay attention to chickadees in my old apple tree. I said I needed green just outside my door. That's why I did not spend time looking for a condo. And me as a renter?? Oh Lordy. I have not rented a living space since daughter was a toddler. ALL the landlords thank me, too. I have enough stress living in town let a lone my mean streak coming out in full living color if somebody were to have power over me like a landlord does. Not joking. I want the freedom to mess my space up all I want. It's a deep craving, I guess. I can't believe this but it is the truth: I walked Moxe dog down past a neighbors today. Sweet Moxe pup walked sedately by my side. She weighs at least forty five pounds. I am grateful that she did not use that against me. Rufus figured out that Moxe and I had snuck out the front door so he was a sad goofball when we got back to the house. I grabbed his leash and walked him down the block the other way. Not long distances but the pups got attention and repetition on the grace of walking nicely with a human. I will never find walking as a partner with a dog boring. Nobody ignoring anyone. Dog in place, one foot up, then down, not pulling or giving human any issues. There and alert. I am grateful to have such creatures in my life. It's a kind of peace, this companionship.

The day that my husband and I have to move into assisted living or some other housing like that will be a sad day. We live on 1.25 acres and there are no neighbors right on top of us. Moxe pup and Rufus dog were very good. Have a good weekend.

@LindaOhio You have a nice place. Can you get your cousin to help you go outside? You could sit in a chair and get some nice sun.

@LindaOHio Get your cousin to go to the Dollar General or a thrift store and get you some chairs.

@sallypup It's too hot to sit in the sun...and buggy. I'm OK sitting inside with the AC. We do have a retractable awning over the back deck...but we need some chairs.

I miss living in a house. I miss my flower and vegetable beds. I miss my hammock. I miss having a grill.

@NJChicaa I am sorry if this silly post of mine makes you feel down. You are welcome to come beat me up if that helps.

@sallypup It didn't upset me. It is just a fact that I miss that stuff. I've been here for 5 years. I can afford a mortgage (barely in this area) but I don't have a huge down payment. I was doing well on one for the first year and then COVID hit, we went into lockdown, and now I own one of everything that Amazon sells. Why do you think I've been doing all of that online tutoring?

@NJChicaa Oh good. You're okay. Agreed on a huge downpayment. We forked over forty thou to get our current house. Then gave up our weedy three acres to get us to being mortgage free on this house. I miss some of that freedom but also remember the rasty neighbors and the dry land.

Renting would not give you the freedom and benefits of your critters and a green walk. I have not rented in over 45 years myself. I think 49 is the correct number. A yard is a lot of responsibility, but it is mine to enjoy as I please.

@GardenGerty You know what? That yard responsibility is a good step away from a nursing home- that is what I tell myself. Working in the garden is something that tells me that I am still on the planet without a full time caregiver.

There is things I would miss about having my own space but things I would not miss.

I can't imagine someone questionning you on your choices when, to me, it's a no-brainer. What wants/needs a landlord? Not me.

I’ll never own a home due to circumstances, but I know it’s financially smarter to own if one can. I like the thought of the freedom you describe, too.

Having that green space and freedom definitely adds a special touch to daily life. It's great to hear how much you appreciate your pups and the peace they bring. Pets really do make life more joyful, don't they?

I have never rented an apartment. Out of high school I had saved enough money from working to buy a new car and a mobile home for me and my son.

To each their own. I have a friend who lives in a condo in town and can walk to do all her errands. She is involved in about 100 activities (I'm not exaggerating ) She can't understand why I want to be stuck looking after this big yard and garden.

Owning a house seems like an accomplishment. Rented places come with certain limitations and no matter how good they might be, you don't have that bond and feeling of owing it. Dogs are very good walking companions.
