I read the main actress, Shelley Duvall has passed away and it made me thinking, this time, i should watch it. I saw it many times on tv here but I avoided cause i knew what it was about. It is a psychological horror movie about a hotel caretaker who tries to murder his wife and a kid, but mostly his wife. The main male lead is Jack Nicholson and let me say he already looks a little crazy or that was always his image, except being a womanizer as well. The movie is directed by Stanley Kubrick and the movie is a book adaption from the Stephen King's novel.
It is a winter and during 5 months, a hotel that will be empty needs a caretaker. Jack comes for an interview where it is said that about decade ago there was a murder in a hotel and the director of a hotel is trying to persuade Jack to see a fuller picture and to question himself, is he capable to withstand his staying for so many months. Of course, Jack says yes and all is good but after a month, he's losing a control, he's becoming more agressive towards his wife, calling her bad names, while his son with psychic abilities senses this even before their moving to hotel. It seems that hotel is showing its hidden power, like it is haunted.
After a week or two when his wife sees that Jack, who is also a wanna be writer in his free time, wrote several pages of the same sentence saying he is dull, she panicks and then the game of her husband chasing her starts. That's a short plot. There are scenes of twisted reality and ghosts too.
It is said that some scenes were cut for the European market and i can confirm it; there should be a doctor scene, where we can see that a Jack is an ex alcoholic but, i didn't see it. Movie has a happy ending.
What I can say is maybe because i knew what the movie was about and i watched it during the day (my trick), i didn't find it too scary but i appreciate seeing how an ordinary person can transform into a different one, showing his evil side. Scenes of chasing, his wife shouting seemed too dramatic and the movie seemed slow paced but the movie was from the 1980 and was more focused on artistic side perhaps.
Nevertheless, I am glad I've watched it.

yes, i mentioned it. she was 75. i also found out that jack didn't want her to stare next to him and that the director made her to repeat some scenes almsot 100 times so when she screams, it was her natural scream. i couldn't watch this several times, great for you

I have seen it once. I think I was watching things from the year I was born, and this happened to be one of them. I don't remember it very well, though. I don't think I really understood it at the time. I was probably watching it while half asleep! I might get around to watching it again.

I've seen it several times. It's very well done; and Nicholson is perfect for the part. I'm glad you finally saw it. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
