Penny Loafers

Yesterday I was talking with a lady who lives in my building, and I noticed she was wearing a pair of old penny loafers. Does anyone remember those shoes? I used to love them and wore them when I was a teenager and maybe into my twenties. But I don't remember seeing or hearing anything about them in years. It brought back interesting memories of the types of shoes I wore as a child. I wasn't supposed to wear loafers or tennis shoes or go barefoot back then because I was under treatment by a foot doctor for having been born with "crooked" legs. Back in the day they thought that building up my arches would help correct my legs. It didn't. But as I got older in childhood, I started refusing to wear the shoes that my mom tried to get me to wear. I was a child, wanting to run and play with my friends, but she had me wearing the best shoes with the best arch supports she could find. Back then that was heavy nurses' shoes. I also got to wear Buster Brown shoes that were suede, but I could not wear them to play in because they would get ruined if they got wet or muddy. She also made me wear saddle shoes, which I hated as well. Then in high school, saddle shoes became THE thing to wear, and I never did because I had hated wearing them when I was younger. There came a time when I broke all the "rules" and only went barefooted when I was outside playing most of the time or wore tennis shoes or those wonderful penny loafers. I always had to have two pennies, one for each shoe. I remember one time putting dimes in the slots instead of pennies. I was in band in school and in high school I had to wear tennis shoes for my band uniform when we marched. One time I had to go back to the foot doctor for a different problem and he checked my legs. He said they looked better than they had and what was I doing. I said I was going barefooted, wearing tennis shoes, and loafers. He said to keep doing what I was doing. LOL I give credit to being in marching band. Did you ever wear penny loafers?

I've never heard of them. Very intriguing if they had pennies in them somewhere. I remember tennis shoes which were in before sneakers.

This link will show you a pair of penny loafers. You slip a penny yourself in the slot on the top of the shoe. https://www.beatnikshoes.com/en/handmade-shoes/moccasins-brown-womens-beatnik-irma-chesnut/ The photo is with the pennies in them.

@capirani Thanks for the photo and link. I've seen such shoes but not with a penny in them.

Absolutely. I remember I was in 8th grade and had my first pair. I had been in parochial school from K-7th grade and always had to wear saddle shoes. Have a good day.
