7/20/24 - Update On My Husband

Encouraging news. My husband did steps yesterday and did quite well. He also put himself back in bed from the wheelchair. I really think it might be possible for him to come home within the next two weeks. I called the rehab facility and got the name of the person that handles the medical records. He will be back on Monday. I will call first thing and see if I can come in on Tuesday, sign the request and get the records. Then our housekeeper can send them from the post office via priority mail. The concrete crew has started on converting our porch steps to steps that are shorter and easier to climb. I'm hoping they get the handrails in before my husband comes home. Thank you for your continued support, prayers and thoughts. Photo Credit: Pixabay

That is good news. He absolutely needs to practice getting out of soft chairs before he comes home though. I am sure his core is quite weak..but getting out of the chair and in bed by himself is a big step.

@LindaOHio I bet he will be too actually. That is why you really need to be able to talk with him everyday to urge him on and be his cheerleading team. Can't you ask a nurse or aide to check if he has his phone on? Remember they are working for you, not the other way around!

@snowy22315 He only turns his phone on when he calls me. I can't get him to keep it on all day.

See if you can visit your husband over the weekend or at the earlist Monday. Type up a letter and have him sign it gegiving permission for you to sign for his medical records, just in case. I ran into that issue when I needed to get labs and scans from the hospital for the VA. You may not need it for your state, or medical system, but I did and I'm legally married to my husband.

@LindaOHio I just didn't want you to run into the same issue I did. They wouldn't let me sign for George's records without written permission because his reccords contained his personal information. So, make sure you're prepared for that ahead of time. I was fine without a letter, because George was out of the hospital then and I was able to drag him with me.

@kaylachan If they require my husband's signature, he is right there in the facility; so that won't be a problem.

They need those hand rails finished, to get your husband inside the house. Steps? How will your poor husband manage those?

He did really well on the steps in physical therapy. The new steps that they are pouring are only 4-1/2" high.
