Preparing for the School Year Ahead

Today is my first day back at work, and it’s Brigada Eskwela week. Brigada Eskwela is dedicated to preparing for the upcoming school year. It’s a voluntary activity where we clean and organize the classrooms, such as repairing broken chairs or tables, or painting classrooms. To earn service credit, we need to participate and contribute some hours. Right now, one day of service credit is equivalent to 8 hours at school. We don’t have personal time off, so if we’re absent, those days are deducted from our salary. However, if we have service credit, it can be used to cover those absences. Today, I stayed at the school for four hours, which is the minimum required. I plan to stay for another four hours on another day to complete 8 hours in total. If I have little to do at home, I might stay the full 8 hours at school. This week, I aim to complete 32 hours, which would give me 4 days of service credit. How do you manage your service credits or extra hours at work? Have you ever participated in similar voluntary activities?

It might vary from place to place. Brigada Eskwela is a great way for us to prepare for the school year and build a sense of community. It’s rewarding in many ways.

I'm glad you earn service credits for the voluntary work. I never had that when I worked. I'm retired now.

Thank you, Valerie! It’s a good system to have. Enjoy your retirement! It’s well-deserved after all those years of hard work.

I haven't had a job which required me to do voluntary work. Glad you were able to get some hours already.

Thanks, Dena! It’s nice to have the option to earn service credits. It makes those hours feel more productive.
