Khuk Khi Kai dates back to the period when Thailand (then Siam) was dealing with French colonial expansion in the late 19th century. After the Franco-Siamese War of 1893, the French occupied parts of Thailand, including the Chanthaburi area, as part of the colonial dispute. The French established this prison to detain Siamese political prisoners and other dissenters. Today, Khuk Khi Kai stands as a historical monument, reminding us of the region's colonial history and the extreme measures used to maintain control over the population. It is a stark example of the inhumanity that political prisoners endured and serves as a point of reflection on human rights. Visitors to the site can view the prison and learn about this dark chapter in Thai history.
