Book bags

The second thing on my list of things to make was book bags. The school librarian has had the idea of doing her bit to reduce the use of plastic by using book bags instead of putting the books into plastic covers. So instead of the books being semi-permanently encased in a protective cover, they will be slipped into a small fabric bag for protection in transit. I have to say I’m not convinced this will work. I imagine most pupils will be handed a book in one of these bags, they’ll get home, toss the bag aside and it will never be seen again. A while later some irritated parent will probably pick it off their offspring’s bedroom floor and throw it away. (The idea that the younger generation is more environmentally-minded, less wasteful etc. is, in my experience, a complete myth). Nevertheless we felt we ought to do our bit to support the school and the librarian’s efforts, so I gathered together some suitable fabrics from my collection. I delivered a bundle of fabric to school one day when I was passing, but saved the rest for us to use (the librarian had emailed round some instructions) so yesterday afternoon we set to work. It’s true they are very simple and quick to make; each one only takes about ten minutes or less. Both girls made one each and I made three. It would be easy to make several more but I do have a backlog of (more difficult) sewing projects so I should really get on with those, but at least we can feel we contributed, and I got to use up some random scraps of material I had had hanging around for years. The only snag was that once we had made them, we rather liked them and started to have second thoughts about giving them away! Now both girls want to make bags for themselves. Maybe the idea will catch on if kids like the bags they're given. Our neighbour when we lived in Donnybrook made, with help, dozens of shopping bags to replace (some of the) plastic bags. I don't know that they lasted too long either for the same reasons you state.

I hope they get used. If they are thrown out they obviously create more waste than the plastic.

@JudyEv True, but making a fabric bag actually uses more resources in terms of land, water etc to make the fabric compared to the plastic. And our waste here is incinerated, so it probably releases more carbon too. It works if the fabric pieces were scraps that would have been disposed of anyway.

@Fleura Except that the fabric would eventually break down.

Fabric bags are very helpful. And although some will toss it away, others will use it. I once made some bags out of old jeans to go to the farmer´s market. I had them for years.
