Name Dropping

According to Definitions from Oxford Languages:
Name dropping is "the practice of casually mentioning the names of famous people one knows or claims to know in order to impress others."
Living where I do, I have known various "famous" people or their family members. I try not to name drop as it seems rather pretentious. But I realize just by me saying that, I sound pretentious .
Sometimes I will see celebrities mentioned in your myLot posts . . . sometimes I will actually know that person or someone related to them. Most likely I won't say anything, but I may giggle to myself .
What do you think of people who name drop ?

Well, from my figure skating days in the late 90s / early 2000s, I did get to know a few skaters just because we practiced on the same ice nearly daily. My childhood friend's husband is a voice actor for an animated series. More recently, an actress known for a CA zip code show passed away - I didn't know her personally, but I knew her brother well in high school. There's way more . . . I think I just got away with still not name dropping .

We have a name dropper here on Mylot sometimes, but it certainly isn’t you. I can’t fathom considering you a name dropper since you’re like the least snobby person around. Just let me know which ones were rude to you so I can actively dislike them for it.

I bet you have some interesting stories about some celebrities you have known. If a person name dropped a lot I would think they were pretentious. But, just once in a while and that wasn't the only stories they brought to the table then I would find them rather interesting.

@much2say .........I doubt you can live in that area and not run into a celebrity or two at some point.

@celticeagle Right - it's pretty common. Stars are human too and have to be out and about at some point .

What the use of name dropping ? Name celebrities wouldn't get them anywere, which just decks themselves out and intimidate others.

I have friends who say they are in the entertainment industry, but well, honestly it's in a very small way . . . and then they talk about the famous people they've talked to or met. I suppose dropping the name makes them feel "bigger" . . . maybe as if some of the famous has been rubbed on them .

I've known some name droppers who think they're all important for knowing these people. But the names they drop are random people that nobody's heard of. Or they might be well known people but the name dropper has never actually met them. I am not a fan of those sorts of name droppers. They're the ones that want you to think they're important because they know someone.
My husband and I have met a few well-known people (I've only really met them at Cons/shows but my husband has met and known some in real life). We don't tend to mention much about it unless it comes up in conversation (e.g. I was talking to a Whovian and we were saying how lovely some of the actors were that we'd met at Cons). On the other hand, there is a certain singer with whom my husband served in the army but husband would rather that name not be mentioned
My sister met a different singer. Another she'd probably prefer not to mention. However, we don't think it's a coincidence that said singer went on hiatus after my sister said (to their face) that they had a whiny voice.
I've gone off on a tangent there (not unusual for me).
Namedropping for the sake of it, to show off or to make yourself look special in some way - not a fan of that.
Mentioning a famous person in conversation because it's relevant and you actually know them - that's not really any different from talking about a non-famous friend.

Right - name droppers think a person will get starry eyed over some famous person that they know, but in reality most people are not really all that impressed. Quite often the story is a bit stretched .
It's neat when those celebs we meet are actually down to earth, and just "real" like any of us. But when they're snooty, snobby, or acting entitled just because they are some big name, it's not cool - oh and they will end up with that reputation.
Your sister was just being honest . That whiny voiced singer probably heard that many times over, but your sister's comment was another one to confirm what the people thought .
I don't mind off tangent topics - makes for interesting conversations, right? I love it on myLot. Go for it.
Yah, the name dropping thing just to call attention to yourself is just eye rolling to others. There is a difference between seeing, meeting, or actually knowing a celeb too.

When someone asks me who I have met, I gladly tell them because it was an exciting time in my life. There's nothing wrong with telling MyLotters who you've met. Have a good weekend.

On myLot, I sure don't mind. We're all here to chat about things . . . so fun to get to know each other about these details of our lives, right? I guess it gets annoying when someone does it constantly or you just know the truth is being stretched. Thank you - hope your Saturday is going well!

@much2say You're welcome. My Saturday was good. My husband's 2nd cousin came and did some weeding for us; and I got to talk to my hubby. It was a win-win.
