About 10 years ago I received a free cell phone from the government, not a smart phone, in the mail. I opened, charged it up, activated it and it did not work!
I called the customer service number that was on the paperwork. I was asked to return it and as soon as they got it I would be sent another one. It took about 3 weeks for me to receive the replacement. It only gives 200 minutes per month!
The same thing happened with my mother about a year before that, here replacement only worked for a short time though!
Before I had got my replacement phone I had gone to a Podiatrist because of something wrong with my foot. She had an xray machine in her office and found nothing wrong, gave me a black boot and some meds. My foot didn't get any better! Therefore she said I needed to have an MRI done. Set up the appointment in 6 days. The late afternoon time before the hospital called me on my daughter's iphone (I didn't have a phone) and cancelled saying that Medicaid wouldn't approve it.
The next day I got my free phone and I called Medicaid and was told that the only way I can get the MRI is if my Podiatrist would put me on a treatment program for 6 months and they would pay for it. I asked treatment for what and I was told for whatever she can think could be possibly wrong. And the doctor was going to have to sign papers agreeing to do surgery at the end of the 6 months. I asked her, "Well what if I don't need to have surgery? " I was then told, " She can cut you open and just look inside and then sew me back up." I said, " Really? It would be a lot cheaper to just pay for the MRI! " She said, "That's the agreement, take it or leave it," I explained that I have had a number of surgeries before that caused me to have dangerous issues. She then said that we are going to send you and the doctor letter saying this. I called the doctor explained to the nurse and she put the doctor on the phone right away. She put me on hold called Medicaid and said that she wouldn't do that because if something goes wrong I could be charged! I agreed and told her I already told them that I wouldn't. So now my 200 minutes was up!
Then waiting for my Disability application I had to go live with my mom and I was not allowed to keep my phone because my mom had one. We are only allowed 200 minutes per month, per household, not person! When my mom's phone stopped working she returned it and said that this was her second one not to bother sending her another one.
I am living in a different home now and about a year ago I saw an advertisement to get a free cell phone. So I clicked it and filled it out and got no response. Then about a week later I got a package in the mail with no return address. It was the cell phone. The paperwork said that it was a Smartphone, but if I wanted to use the Smartphone features including taking pictures I was going to have to sign up to pay $30 a month. Then in order to find out my phone number I had to call my daughter and see the number that showed up on the caller ID. Also in order to use the phone I have to make call at least once a month! There was no phone number to contact them just a website link.
Went to make my second phone call and it would not go through, so I went to the link to their chat line and told them. I was told that someone would call me soon after they had tried other repair options that didn't work.
Nobody ever called me or texted me!
My brother-in-law tried to get a phone from both the previous people and this advertisement. Both times he was told that he couldn't get it because someone by the name off both his first name (Bill Bill) has a free phone even though is social security number and birthdate do not match. So they are both run by the government obviously.
I still don't know what is wrong with my foot!
See how the free phone system works and how our tax dollars work out?

I have a basic flip phone with a camera and pay $10 per month to Boost. I haven't had any problems or any hassle with them. Have a good day.

My daughter got a phone from the government and had nothing but problems with it. Now we have Tracfones and they are inexpensive and we have never had an issue with them. We will be getting two more in a few months.

@celticeagle That's what I am saying it's the same exact information that the government had when he applied for the first phone. Therefore this "so called" private company was actually the government! Wow ! QVC is doing this? My problem is because of the way Androis phones are made I cannot take screenshots on them only on iphones because I have permanent nerve in my hand. You got a great deal!

Great! Tracfone was my very first iphone that was not under contract and never had any technical issues with it. Just at the time they were 25 cents a minute! I don't know how much they are now.
I was with Virgin Mobile for many years they were month to month and their phones were good. Then they shut down. The best one I liked was Consumer Cellular. Cheap, great customer service! Then we moved and could not get good reception here, so we had to try and find something else. That is when I went to the free phone, but I was told it was from a private company, not the government. So I told my sister about it for my brother-in-law and they told him the same thing the government told him before about someone at that address already has a phone, a first name and last name the same as my bil except not the same birthdate or social security number.

@dfollin .......Weird about someone else having his info. Weird. I'm happy with Tracfone and I get it through QVC where I can pay monthly payments. As far as the service it is free for the entire year and then I call in to extend it another year. I think that $100 for the phone, charger, and some extras for an entire year and unlimited data, talk, and text. It's great!

What a pain! I have thought about those phones before and wondered if they were decent. I will stick with a paid phone. They really aren't that expensive.

@dfollin It's government, what do they do correctly? Answer: not much. They should just stick to the very basics, maybe they can get that right. Not sure why they got into the phone business anyway. There are plenty of places to get a cheap phone. It's not fine they are spending tax dollars like that, I wish I knew how to stop them, I'd love or them to get back to the basics.

I had a free phone through trackphone for a number of years. I lost it because I forgot to make the once a month phone call. If you want a free phone, there are better options out there. There are services too that offer free phone services such as textnow.

@kaylachan No I don't have a landline phone. I have a temporary phone that I cannot pay for. Yes postage has gone up again on the 13th. Postage goes up every January then July. Huh? Everything cost much these days. And this didn't happen once!

Yep, mine and my mother's as well as other people I have spoke to even got their phones damaged. Free or not, why have "whoever " is paying for them use money to manufacture, send, have returned and resent?

I do not see how you get by because around here you have to have a cell phone to almost do anything. It is starting to be required to do anything. Most people are required to have cell phones at work. You need them to get rides from Lyft, Uber and even a regular taxi now. You have to have them to order groceries for delivery. Some places including doctors require them to make appointments. My mom had to have them in the hospital room and rehab center room. My uncle (like my father) needed one in the nursing home, but he didn't have one.

@RasmaSandra Good for you. I can order from Amazon from the laptop. But I was told that the other things need to be done from a Smartphone. Besides I am not sure how long this laptop will last. And in a month or so I will not have internet or a home.

It is a shame! I´m ashamed of many things that happen in my country but this is worse than that.
