Our country has been in an energy chaos.

Good morning, friends.
This is my first post in 2 days and I can see outside a beautiful sun and blue skies after the worst winds I´ve experienced in my life.
Our city had no energy for over 24 hours and part of it has water problems. I just messaged some of my friends to feel free to come to my house for water suply and showers.
But before that I was afraid that all the food I had in the freezer would have to be thrown away. I had no way of knowing what was happening outside and didn´t dare use my cellphone (the only thing that worked) because I might need it for something important.
I will now finish my grocery list. I´ll check some important groceries because I´m not sure at all if this will happen again. I am begining to undersand that climate change not only means that it is warmer. It is also so different that we will have to learn to live in another planet.
See you later.

So very concerning. It’s hard to be without power, it’s not the pioneer days anymore, most of us don’t have a wood stove or a source to heat and cook without power.
That is generous of you to offer water and showers if needed. We all have to have water! Take good care of yourself, Marga.

Sometimes we don´t think about how terrible everything can be without water or energy. When I was still with no light, Lili called me and told me that they had light (and news) and that in some places there was no water. She had filled her tub just in case but I don´t have a tub in the first floor. And I hadn´t thought about cleaning the toilet She told me that if I had water problems, I was to go to her house. My friends are wonderful!

I try hard to be a bit prepared in case of a power outage, but that’s difficult. I keep charcoal for the charcoal grill, and I have an ancient, very basic camp stove one burner thing. I have an emergency weather radio that will charge any devices. It has a hand crank if it ever runs out of battery, I can use the crank. I keep some non perishables for just in case, and have flashlights and batteries. I also keep some gallon jugs in the garage full of water—they are not for drinking, but for flushing if ever needed. I did need a few of them once due to a long ice storm outage. Just a few things to help me survive if needed.
I am glad you have your good friends to fall back on if needed. I know that’s a good feeling.

@MarieCoyle The last time we had a power problem here was when we were with no energy for 3 days after the Feb 2010 earthquake. Then I stood in front of the freezer and thought hard what I wanted and where it was and THEN I quickly opened the door. Nothing got defrosted in those 3 days.

We have been lucky that the storms we have had didn't take our power out. Downtown had about 600 residents out but we are in the North End. Sorry you had this storm. I'm always worried about the food we have in the freezer going bad too. Always good to have some canned food on hand.

I have canned food. And pasta and rice and potatoes. But I would hate to have to throw away food.
