Do you use online abbreviations while you are texting? Like LOL, OMG, SMH, idk, etc. At first I wasn't using them, because I was not aware of them. Then some friends started teaching me what they meant. Today I was told by someone that I am close to that I need to stop using them right away. That it makes me look stupid! What do you think?

I use abbreviations on this site when I have to abbreviate the law enforcement agencies in my stories. I try to avoid using abbreviations when writing since I am an old school writer.

Sometimes, I will use lol in writing in here and other things where I an writing a discussion or story. But when I am texting on Facebook or an email or text to a friend I use more abbreviations.

I mostly don't use these abbreviations. Though, I'm aware of most of them that you mentioned. My personal opinion is that it doesn't look stupid at all to use these words. On the contrary, it's fun at times. Because you don't know what the person you are chatting with will come up with. So it's a bit amusing and cool at the same time to read these abbreviations.

I had to learn some abbreviations when I started here, at mylot. I confess that I specially hate them when someone is explaining an ailment, for instance. I don´t mind the "lol" and OMG. But when you are trying to understand about a medical test for a big illness abbreviations make you give up.

I don't use too many of them but I'm a bit of a grammar/English Nazi. It's doesn't really worry me when others use them but perhaps you can get too much of a good thing. I only know the meanings of a few.

I don't know a lot of them, usually just use them at the begining or the end of a sentence or paragraph.

I certainly don't think it makes you look stupid. It makes you look hip! Have a good day.

I do use abbreviations during my online interactions. Like you , initially I was not aware of the terms and internet slangs. It took me time and interacting with others to get hold of the terms and their meaning. The good thing about the abbreviations is that it saves characters especially while using twitter or SMS and convey themessage with help of short terms. It can also convey feelings which otherwise needs to be elaborated. The only suggestion is to use the terms with people who are well aware of them. Well, the online abbreviations are growing and it is nice to know most of them. Do not think you need to stop , perhaps limit with people who do not have such awareness.

At first I wasn’t either then I learned some of them and had some people asking for me to teach them as I learned them.

I don't think it makes people look stupid just they should be used to make sense of things, For instance if I read about something shocking I will begin with OMG and then give my opinion about what I read, I see nothing wrong with that as long as you don't use them too much,

I see.

I do think that you should not use it. The full words should be used to prevent sms language from taking over. People need to use the full words to maintain and improve spelling and grammar
