8/10/24 - Update on My Husband

The rehab facility is running on a generator since the power is out. They cannot run the air conditioning; and my husband said he spent all day yesterday hot and sweaty.
He is not getting fed on a regular basis. The people with the food trays are bypassing his room. He had to raise a ruckus to get a meal and it was cold. One evening an aide shared a sandwich with him. This is deplorable; and I'm going to have to complain to the Social Worker. The COVID has affected his sense of taste and nothing really tastes good to him. He had asked for some cough medicine a couple of days ago, especially something that would help bring up the mucus from his chest; but no one ever brought him anything.
I have no idea when he can come home; but he is going to start physical therapy again on Monday. He has spent more than a week in bed; so he will have regressed.
His chest is still congested; but he doesn't seem to be coughing as much.

Do you still have a local newspaper that you can write to and complain about the deplorable conditions your hubby has been subjected to?

Yes we do. My husband has already complained to the State board when they were there. We don't want to make any major complaints until he's out of there. I will leave some really bad reviews of the place.

I am sorry this is happening, but I talked to you awhile back about getting Door dash or Uber eats or one of those places to deliver food to him at least once or twice a week. It would keep his spirits up, and just as importantly get some calories in him. Charge the meals to the rehab by deducting it from the bill, and put on your list of incidents...and also I would put an anonymous complaint in with whomever is in charge of that place, the state board of nursing or whomever.

I spoke to one of his nurses. She is checking to make sure his room number is included on the list of residents who should get meals. I really should get the Ombudsman involved again. As far as Door Dash goes, I don't think my hubby would go along with that.

What a nightmare this has been. I wonder if a lawyer could help ? Hopefully the power comes on soon.

We can get help from the Ombudsman and the State agency that came in to inspect the facility.

MAN I have to say he's in a real bad rehab place to be cared for
I wouldn't have been there long cause that wouldn't have worked
for my husband if I was in a place like that, he would have taken me out.

@2ndchances24 We should have purchased long term health care insurance years ago. Now we are either too old or the cost is very prohibitive.

@LindaOHio That's what I would do & I'd get me a better ins
or some 1 that KNOWS what the H3ll they're doing to give
him better health care, cause what he's been through so far
has hindered his health more than they should have.

The same type of avoidance and missing of meals happened to Bob both in VA and in the skilled nursing facility. At that nursing home when we left (they sneaked him out the back door, because he was "contaminated" with C. Diff and covid) the DON came to tell us goodbye and seemed insulted when I said that none of her staff wanted to even come to his room. Yes, he was the last one to get meals, they were cold and they forgot silverware, etc. etc. If they will let you bring him home the sooner the better. It makes me mad for him. And you.

Starving and neglecting someone won't restore their power any sooner.
That party that you reported the conditions to a while back, which I cannot remember, should they not be made aware of this? They are not feeding him, not providing him with the medication which he is requesting and not providing him with PT.

Can you have a meal or two delivered to the rehab for him over the weekend, until you can reach the social worker? He needs to eat...even if he can't taste much due to the Covid, he still needs food. I know it would be costly, but hopefully would just be for 2 days. Poor guy. Must be so frustrated over all of this.

What happened to cause the power outage? I can't believe they don't have a powerful enough generator to be able to run A/C in the facility.

@LindaOHio Oh wow, I hadn’t heard about that. The only weather news I’ve heard over the past week was the flooding Tropical storm Debby was causing in Georgia and the Carolinas.

We had a big storm with all kinds of downed trees and power lines. There were 3 confirmed tornadoes in the Greater Cleveland area and one out by us.
