Good evening. Today, I've been trying very hard to keep my eyes open while thinking I should have taken the day off to recover from my holiday! I went with my husband, my dad, and my oldest son (youngest didn't want to go so he stayed home to look after the cats). This was my dad's first time abroad. It was my second time abroad, furthest destination, and possibly the most places visited in one holiday. It was what you might call a 'big' holiday. We'd originally tried to book France and the Eurotunnel but ended up with a coach trip to Germany. We spent a lot of time travelling. It's very far from England to Germany by road! We stayed in Brussels (Belgium) for 2 of the nights, and we stayed in Langenau (Germany) for 4 nights. We also drove through parts of Austria and Netherlands as well as having to come to and from the continent via France. We had three excursions including. The first was to Nuremburg. My husband didn't join us as he was feeling unwell. My son and I had wanted to go to the castle there but my dad was complaining about the walk (he was really annoying in several ways all the time we were there but I'll try to stick with the positives) so we went to the town museum instead. That was quite interesting. It didn't look much from the outside but was over 5 floors with a small display in an adjoining building. We then had lunch by the river Pegnitz. The lunch was a packed lunch provided by the hotel. We were very well looked after there with lovely meals. The staff were nice but the boss lady was a bit scary and the beds weren't as comfortable as the beds in Brussels. The second day, we visited Neuschwanstein Castle. They was the inspiration for Disney's Castle. Personally, I have no interest in Disney but I do love castles. It was truly beautiful, and the views were stunning. The castle is set in the Alps. We weren't allowed to take pictures during the tour, but we had a young lady give us some information about it. I don't remember much of what she said We went up to the Castle by bus and then a mile walk. We came down by horse and cart. The third day, we visited Rothenburg. That's where I took the picture I've shared here. My dad wandered off by himself while husband, son and I visited a mediaeval museum of crime and justice. That was quite interesting. While looking for the museum, we found a lovely cafe where my husband treated us to an expensive smoothie! Some other people had said the crime museum wasn't very big. I can only assume they didn't actually go in because that was over 3 floors in one building and 2 in another. Langenau was a lovely little town with a beautiful river (the river Nau) running through it. My son and I took a few morning/evening walks around. We also popped into a local pub on our last day there. The proprietor didn't speak English, which was good because I wanted to practice my German and everyone else had been speaking to me in English! While we were in Brussels, I wanted to try and speak a local language but realised they speak so many there and didn't want to pick the wrong one! That hotel (Holiday Inn) was comfortable but there was nothing else apart from other hotels and some factory/office spaces. The drinks and food at the hotel were very expensive, but it was nice sitting outside during a pleasant summer evening. They also had some free games to play (ping pong, boules, foosball). We made a few friends (which is something I've not really done on a holiday before). We'd like to go back to Germany but probably travel by plane next time. And we're not taking my dad again. He'd been excited about his first time abroad and then moaned all the way through it. Anyway, I said I won't go on about that so I won't. So that's where I've been. How about you?

Sounds like a great trip. I love castles and Medieval history. The only places we've been to out of the US are Mexico, Canada and Bermuda. Have a good day.

It was good, very educational as well as beautiful. I had only been out of the UK once before. That was to the Spanish island of Mallorca. I knew we'd go through France and would stay I Belgium and Germany on this trip. The brief time on the coach through Netherlands and Austria was a nice bonus! We were actually supposed to go to Canada for a friend's wedding, but they had to postpone. We ended up on this Bavarian trip because it fitted the time I'd already booked off!

@LindaOHio yes, I am in England. I've been to Wales a few times. The last time was in 2014, and that visit included Cardiff Castle. I've never been to Scotland, though. I have visited lots of castles in England. We have a membership for English Heritage, which looks after most of our castles and some other historical buildings. The one we've been to the most is Kenilworth Castle because it's the closest one to us. My favourite is Dover Castle. It's huge, a lot of it preserved well, and it has amazing views of the white cliffs of Dover and over the English Channel to France.

Neuschwanstein is so beautiful! It would be nice to see it in real life. Maybe next time, your dad should stay home with the cats, lol

My husband has said he's not going anywhere with my dad again. He was like a giant toddler (except most toddlers I've taken anywhere have been much better behaved! The castle really is beautiful. One of our group couldn't make it due to mobility. It's really not accessible. I mean, it is a castle but even getting to it is hard.

@pumpkinjam yes, I guess it's way up in the mountains, isn't it! From the photos it looks that way. I doubt my arthritic knee would be very cooperative.

@AliCanary yes, it is. Even with the transport options provided, there is still a good walk to the castle itself. I did find out later that you can arrange transport to get you closer, and there is means to help people with disabled. That wouldn't have been any good for our group as you have to book in advance and the facilities can only accommodate one person at a time. Ours was a group of 48 people, most of whom had mobility problems! 47 of us made it, though!

It sounds like a fantastic place to visit. My sister and my mother went to Germany one time, but I don't think they made it to Bavaria. My nephew has been to Germany once or twice for business as well.

It really was. There was so much else we'd love to see. The coach trip was good but didn't give a lot of time to do all we wanted.
