A glimpse at the past

On Sunday, we took Vince’s older brother and his wife to our old home town. Vince’s family grew up in the town and three of the five brothers worked with the railways. His father was a railway guard and they lived across the road from the railway centre. I grew up on a farm 13 miles out of town. The central focus of the town was the railways. From the station, branch lines went off in all directions. However, now it rarely sees a train and the town has almost died. The old railway station has become a tourist centre and includes a huge mostly-to-scale model of the town in the 1960s. The men enjoyed finding the different shops of their boyhood, most of which have gone now. The photo shows a portion of the model.

The creator researched how the place would have been in its heyday. There are just a few of the lines and sheds left now.

I so love the railroad anything. My Irish Grandfather worked for the railroad there in Limerick.

Vince's father and two brothers all worked in the railways. The eldest brother is very keen on railway history and memorabilia.

That is a wonderful way to preserve history. But it is sad that the town has gone away.

You have to wonder how long some of these towns can survive. It does cater for a large farming hinterland.

With the rise of the car, we had a similar thing in the UK. So many places lost their rail link. It is a pity as I think it is more relaxing to travel by train, where you can read, listen to music and have a meal.

@Ronrybs Our city has electric trains but those travelling overland are diesel-electric so Vince says. Through the winter there is just a couple of steam trains that do tourist trips.

@JudyEv In the old rail yard at Southall there is steam engine and vintage coaches looked after by a steam preservation society. It is not unusual to see the engine taking a run through West Drayton

The shops were all the ones that were there when we were growing up. Now more than half have closed down.

It is indeed. I can't imagine how many hours he would have put into creating it.

It is nice to go back in time and relive the past. I enjoy nostalgic moments especially now that I am retired.

The past begins to have more meaning as you get older. At least, that's how it seems to me.
